Description

The company's grid systems integration business line provides control and protection solutions for line commutated converter (LCC) HVDC valves, the systems that connect remote and offshore renewables and reinforce AC grids.

The HVDC NPI team is hiring a senior engineer to be the technical authority for LCC HVDC systems, acting as consultant and gatekeeper for design quality, leading technology upgrades and mentoring junior engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Be the recognised expert on LCC HVDC control and protection, both inside and outside the company.
  • Write, review and govern system-level and functional requirements for LCC HVDC systems.
  • Define validation strategies for functional requirements so that performance, reliability and safety standards are met.
  • Oversee the creation and upkeep of detailed design specifications for complex subsystems.
  • Drive standardisation inside and outside the company, including work with IEC, CIGRE and similar professional bodies.
  • Lead root cause analysis and hold technical authority on major quality, supplier and field issues.
  • Support R&D from concept through industrialisation and build technology links across the company's businesses.
  • Coach engineers, support their skill development and give technical advice across the business.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or PhD in electrical engineering, power systems or a related field focused on control systems.
  • Experience as a technical lead on industrial applications such as HVDC, power electronics or power systems.
  • Experience writing formal system and functional requirements and managing validation and verification work.
  • Strong record developing control and protection algorithms in MATLAB/Simulink and running EMT studies.
  • Deep knowledge of LCC technology: firing angle control, synchronisation logic, commutation failure prediction and mitigation, DC line protection and recovery sequences, and AC/DC interaction with reactive power control.
  • Solid understanding of large-scale, high-reliability, high-performance real-time control systems.
  • Ability to apply advanced technology to hard technical problems.
  • Preferred: excellent written and verbal communication, including dealing with senior leaders and customers.
  • Preferred: proven record of leading complex engineering processes in demanding environments.
  • Preferred: recognised industry expertise in LCC HVDC control and protection.
  • Preferred: willingness to travel for business and technical consultation as required.
  • You do not need to meet every requirement. Apply if your skills and experience match several key parts of the role.

Conditions

The company is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer.

Benefits

  • Relocation assistance is provided.
  • Fair pay and performance-based rewards.
  • Wellbeing programmes for you and your family.
  • Career support with chances to move across teams and functions, guided by your people leader and mentors.
