Description

The role is for a full-stack software engineer on a large transformation effort at the company, working in a collaborative and inclusive environment that delivers in iterative cycles and tackles complex business problems.

The team builds cutting-edge solutions with open source frameworks and emerging technologies, and the work is meant to meet real customer needs.

Responsibilities

• Lead a set of varied technology projects and a team of developers who have deep experience with distributed microservices and full-stack systems, building solutions that address the company's regulatory requirements.
• Keep up with technology trends, try and learn new tools, take part in internal and external technical communities, and mentor other engineers.
• Work with digital product managers to deliver resilient cloud-based solutions that give millions of Americans better tools for financial empowerment.
• Work with languages and tools including Java, Scala, Python, Go, Node.js, JavaScript and TypeScript, open source relational and NoSQL databases, Docker and Kubernetes container orchestration, and a range of AWS services.
• Provide technical leadership across several teams, shaping system architecture and the long-term technology direction.
• Own the design and delivery, end to end, of large-scale distributed or cloud-native systems that must be highly reliable and perform well.
• Work with architects and product leaders to set platform roadmaps and a shared services strategy.

Requirements

• Basic qualifications: a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or a related quantitative field such as statistics, economics, operations research, analytics, mathematics or engineering.
• Basic qualifications: at least 6 years of software engineering experience. Internships do not count toward this.
• Basic qualifications: at least 3 years of experience with public cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), cloud-based productivity tools, or virtualization technologies.
• Preferred: a master's degree in computer science or a related field.
• Preferred: 9+ years of coding experience in more than two of Go, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Rust, C and Scala.
• Preferred: 5+ years contributing to open source frameworks.
• Preferred: 5+ years working with front-end JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks.
• Preferred: 5+ years building synchronous and asynchronous APIs.
• Preferred: 4+ years working with databases and database management systems.
• Preferred: 4+ years with AWS, GCP, Azure, or cloud-based productivity tools or virtualization technologies.
• Preferred: 4+ years with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code and automated testing frameworks.
• Preferred: 4+ years using Git-based version control such as Git, GitHub or Bitbucket.
• Preferred: 4+ years troubleshooting technical problems in cloud environments.
• Preferred: 3+ years mentoring senior engineers and supporting professional growth within technical teams.
• Preferred: 2+ years using observability to find and fix performance bottlenecks in distributed systems.
• Preferred: 1+ year leading architecture design reviews and shaping enterprise-wide technical standards and methods.
• Preferred: 1+ year setting and enforcing coding standards and design patterns across teams.
• Preferred: 1+ year putting observability and reliability practices in place at scale.
• Preferred: experience using modern AI-based coding tools and IDE copilots.
• Preferred: experience shaping technology strategy at the portfolio or business unit level.
• Preferred: experience with interactive AI tools for boosting productivity beyond basic code completion.
• Preferred: experience leading cross-functional engineering efforts or large technical initiatives.

Conditions

The company will consider sponsoring a new qualified applicant for employment authorization for this role.

Full-time annual base salary in McLean, VA is $229,900 to $262,400. Part-time pay is prorated to the agreed number of regular hours.

Candidates hired into other locations are paid within that location's range, and the exact salary is stated in the offer letter.

The role is eligible for performance-based incentive pay, which may include cash bonuses and or long-term incentives. Incentives may be discretionary or non-discretionary, depending on the plan.
