Description

The company is a global technology firm with more than 83,000 staff spread over five continents, including over 7,500 in the UK. It works across defence, space, aerospace and digital security.

The role is hybrid, based in Bristol, Reading or Crawley.

The company builds advanced products such as autonomous air and sea platforms, high-performance sonar arrays, air traffic management systems and electronic warfare countermeasures.

You would lead safety engineering on demanding projects and keep building your expertise in the field.

The team is growing its specialist safety engineering group, and this is a senior role.

You should have worked on products used in safety-critical settings, both developing them and making sure they stay safe in operation.

Career paths can lead into technical depth, management or programme work. Projects range from a £300m+ programme for the UK MOD to autonomous UAS work, avionics and simulation.

You would have mentors, academic links and progression plans, and internal candidates get priority for vacancies in the team.

Responsibilities

  • Write safety plans and make sure they are carried out on projects.
  • Apply systems safety engineering to complex systems and mentor junior safety engineers.
  • Build robust safety cases and the evidence that supports them for company products.
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams to find, assess and manage hazards and risks.
  • Carry out systems safety activities and assessments.
  • Contribute to engineering work across the stages of the systems lifecycle.

Requirements

  • Experience in systems, product or safety engineering within a regulated, safety-focused sector such as rail, aerospace, defence, medical, nuclear or oil and gas.
  • Experience preparing safety cases, with a working knowledge of ALARP principles and arguments.
  • Proven hands-on use of fault tree analysis, event tree analysis, common cause failure analysis, functional failure analysis, FMECA, interface hazard analysis, system hazard logs and system hazard analysis reports.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in an engineering development setting, ensuring systems safety compliance across the project lifecycle.
  • SC clearance is required. Holding it already would be advantageous, but if you do not hold it, you must obtain and maintain it.
  • To be eligible for full SC, you generally need to have lived in the UK for the last 5 years. In some cases, 3 years of UK residence over the last 5 may be accepted, with additional overseas checks.

Conditions

Hybrid working from Bristol, Reading or Crawley.

The company ensures equal opportunities, pay and working conditions for everyone.

Benefits

  • Annual bonus and development-focused targets.
  • Pension contributions matched by the company up to 7%.
  • Private medical insurance and private healthcare.
  • Relocation support where required.
  • Training, development and career opportunities, including mentoring and coaching from experienced industry experts.
  • Buying or selling annual leave, a cycle to work scheme, employee discounts, a paid volunteering day and stocks and shares, depending on the role.
