This Staff or Senior Software Engineer role sits in the autonomous vehicle core infrastructure group. You will write and run software that automates and operates the secure hybrid network linking on-premises sites with Google Cloud Platform (GCP), which carries sensor and validation data for the autonomous vehicle development pipeline.
The work is mainly software engineering, not scripting or hand-configuring devices. You will build, test, ship, and run production network services in Go and Python, applying distributed systems and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) methods to cut configuration drift and manual work across the network that supports the autonomous vehicle program.
Responsibilities
Build, test, deploy, and maintain production network services and automation in Go, Python, and current software practices.
Create APIs, controllers, integrations, and tools that handle network provisioning, configuration, validation, and lifecycle work.
Apply distributed systems design, concurrency, automated testing, and safe rollout methods to network infrastructure.
Keep network changes in version control, peer reviewed, tested, and shipped through CI/CD pipelines.
Set, track, and improve SLOs for availability, latency, throughput, and change reliability.
Reduce operational toil, configuration drift, and repeat failures using SRE practices.
Build telemetry and observability that show how hybrid connectivity and network services are performing.
Help design and grow the network linking on-premises data centers, validation environments, test facilities, and GCP.
Design secure, scalable, multi-tenant networks that protect sensitive AV data while giving fast access to developer tools, automated build systems, and compute.
Write reusable Infrastructure as Code modules and self-service tools for engineers and researchers.
Work with network, cloud, security, and platform teams to turn architecture needs into reliable software and automated workflows.
Lead complex projects and mentor engineers while staying hands-on as an individual contributor.
Tune end-to-end paths from hardware ingestion points through hybrid links into cloud storage and compute.
Support low-latency, high-throughput, highly available connectivity for validation environments and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulations.
Work with hardware systems, cloud infrastructure, and platform teams to connect validation worker pools to cloud-native services.
Build automation and safeguards so high-volume data transfer is reliable, observable, and recoverable.
Enforce least-privilege access, segmentation, encryption in transit, and automated policy checks.
Use performance tests, telemetry, and capacity planning to hold the throughput and reliability AV workloads need.
Join the on-call rotation and incident response for network services and hybrid connectivity.
Find root causes using logs, metrics, traces, packet captures, and telemetry across application, host, network, and cloud layers.
Lead or join blameless incident reviews and ship fixes that stop repeats.
Manage error budgets and balance release speed against reliability.
Requirements
Proven experience building and running production network software and automation.
Strong skills in networking, software engineering, Linux, and cloud infrastructure.
Experience with on-call work and incident response.
Ability to lead projects and mentor engineers as a senior individual contributor.
Software development experience building and operating production services in Go, Python, or a comparable modern language.
Experience with distributed systems, API design, concurrency, automated testing, code review, CI/CD, debugging, and production operations.
Strong Linux systems knowledge and an understanding of how applications use host and network resources.
Strong networking fundamentals: routing, switching, TCP/IP, DNS, data center networking, and BGP.
Hands-on experience with GCP networking, including VPCs, Shared VPCs, routing, firewall policies, load balancing, and hybrid connectivity.
Experience with infrastructure automation and configuration management using Terraform or Ansible.
Experience with Kubernetes and with continuous or GitOps-based delivery.
Familiarity with observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Telegraf, or centralized logging.
Bachelor's degree in a related field, or equivalent practical experience, preferred.
6+ years of relevant software, networking, or SRE experience, preferred.
Professional networking or cloud certification, preferred.
Experience with large-scale networks, SRE practices, high-throughput data systems, EVPN, or VXLAN is a plus.
