Description

The company lets people pay for purchases over time with clear, predictable terms.

The Recoveries team sits within the Repayments area. It builds the platform that decides how to recover money from charged-off loans in the most effective way while keeping the customer experience strong. The work happens both through integrations with external recovery partners and through customer-facing tools that let customers settle what they owe in flexible ways.

The systems cover the whole recoveries lifecycle: placing and recalling loans, partner integrations, payments and remittances, reconciliation, bankruptcy workflows, and customer-facing recovery experiences. The team works with engineering, product, risk, analytics, operations, finance, legal, and compliance. Its systems directly affect recovery outcomes, so they must be correct, reliable, and compliant with regulation.

The team is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to set the technical direction of the Recoveries platform. Priorities include scaling decisioning, expanding internationally, strengthening data integrity and reconciliation, and building the next generation of recovery products.

Responsibilities

  • Set the team's technical strategy on a one-year horizon and connect it to high-impact projects.
  • Shape the platform's evolution by leading cross-team initiatives that improve recovery strategies, enable flexible customer experiences, and make financial and partner integrations more reliable and scalable.
  • Work with product management, design, and analytics throughout the product development lifecycle so that technical sustainability, risks, and trade-offs are understood and managed.
  • Multiply the impact of your team by defining and promoting technical solutions and operational practices.
  • Own your team's operational health and availability by making sure monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing, and alerting are in place for run-the-business work and on-call.
  • Build a culture of quality and ownership by setting code review and design standards for your team and promoting them more widely through writing and tech talks.
  • Grow the people on your team through feedback, guidance, and by setting an example.
  • Take part in an on-call rotation, which is required for this role.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience as a software engineer.
  • Experience building and launching large-scale backend systems with Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
  • Experience designing and running correctness-sensitive batch, asynchronous, or data-processing systems, including scheduled workflows, backfills, reconciliation, observability, and strong failure handling.
  • Experience designing solutions across complex systems and organizational boundaries, and being comfortable driving changes beyond your own area, including in backend services and customer-facing applications, to deliver end-to-end results.
  • Experience delivering major features or system components, or retiring existing functionality, through a written technical and execution plan. You write high-quality code that others can easily understand and use.
  • Comfortable working in ambiguous situations and moving between low-level language details and the architecture of large systems.
  • A track record of gathering feedback from engineering and cross-functional peers and acting on it well.
  • Strong verbal and written communication that helps you work effectively with the global engineering team.
