Staff Machine Learning Engineer - VoIP Infrastructure

Description

The team builds VoIP infrastructure and telephony platforms that support AI-driven voice workloads, including the observability features for them.

The role is a Staff level Machine Learning Engineer position focused on VoIP infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Help design, build and roll out VoIP infrastructure, telephony platforms and observability features for AI voice workloads.
• Work with engineering, product and infrastructure colleagues so voice and AI platforms run efficiently, scale well and connect cleanly across SIP/RTP, Kamailio, RTPEngine and related telecom systems.
• Turn operational telephony and AI workload needs into requirements for tooling, helping to improve the SRE practice over time.
• Support deployment and day-to-day operation of VoIP systems and of the AI/ML developers working in live voice environments.
• Write clean, scalable, reusable code and uphold engineering standards such as code reviews and unit testing.
• Work with product owners to clarify detailed requirements, then own your work from design through implementation, test automation and delivery, across both the telephony and LLM integration layers.
• Integrate LLMs into voice platforms and real-time communication systems.
• Mentor colleagues and share knowledge across telecom and AI engineering.

Requirements

• Hands-on experience building VoIP systems with SIP/RTP.
• Practical working knowledge of Kamailio, RTPEngine, FreeSWITCH, SBCs and PSTN systems, or similar.
• Working knowledge of PSTN infrastructure and telecom protocols.
• Experience building applications on top of existing LLMs, without training models yourself.
• Experience with prompt engineering and building LLM-based features.
• 4+ years of development experience in Python, Go, Java or similar languages.
• 4+ years running highly available distributed workloads on Kubernetes using a DevOps approach.
• Experience building distributed systems with cloud-native software.
• Experience with software-defined networking, infrastructure as code and configuration management.
• Experience with DevOps tools such as Helm, Ansible, Kubernetes, Prometheus, Splunk or GitLab CI is an asset.
• Experience building software for compliance and security in regulated environments is an asset.
• 4+ years in infrastructure and platform operations, deployments, SRE and DevOps, with a continued focus on platform health, is an asset.

Conditions

Base pay for this location is $176,100 to $308,200, plus equity where applicable, variable or incentive pay and benefits.

Pay is set by the geographic location of the role and depends on factors such as qualifications, skill level, competencies and work location, so the base shown is a guideline only.

Work persona (flexible, remote or required in office) is assigned based on the nature of the work and the work location. The company may use a third-party service to check the distance between your home and the nearest office.
