Staff Fullstack Engineer

Description

The company is a construction technology business. Contractors still measure and count materials by hand from drawings, which limits how many jobs they can bid on. The company uses computer vision and natural language processing to automate takeoffs and estimates so contractors can bid more quickly and win more work.

The company closed a $35M Series A led by 8VC, with Primary and Pear participating, and is growing quickly.

This is a staff role owning the architecture of the core platform, built on React, Django, and PostgreSQL. You will also set the technical bar for the engineers who build on it.

The main challenges are very large drawings, dense estimates, and computer vision output that contractors verify line by line, all within one application that must stay fast as more trades are added.

Priorities can change as the team learns from customers, and playbooks, context, and requirements are often incomplete when work begins. You will help define them.

Responsibilities

• Own the platform's architecture across APIs, data models, frontend, and infrastructure
• Make design decisions that still hold at 100 times current usage, and document them
• Lead work across computer vision, product, and design teams from scoping through launch
• Build complete features yourself across the full stack
• Define standards for code review, testing, and performance
• Run production on AWS and GCP and reduce operational load
• Mentor engineers and raise the bar for hiring

Requirements

• 8+ years building and operating production web applications, from frontend through infrastructure
• Deep experience with React and Python backends, Django preferred
• Experience owning the architecture of a system that handled significant scale
• Experience setting technical direction across teams and mentoring engineers
• Product judgment: you understand why the product is being built and you protect its scope
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent mix of education and specialized experience
• Experience with canvas-heavy or data-dense interfaces
• Experience as an early or founding engineer at a startup
• Exposure to construction or other real-world industries

Conditions

Full-time position based in person at the San Francisco office at 101 2nd Street, 4 days a week
