Description

The role is a staff-level position in build and release engineering, owning build and release strategy and hands-on delivery for complex releases of a software product, including parallel and concurrent releases.

You will run continuous integration, deployments and testing across the software development lifecycle, working on your own and acting as a technical lead.

The job calls for a solid grasp of how concurrent development affects build management and how builds move across versions and environments.

Responsibilities

  • Set the strategy for, design and build out build, continuous integration, delivery, testing and release processes for large releases, sometimes across several concurrent releases.
  • Improve the release process for scale and efficiency, and make sure the correct builds reach each environment.
  • Own key deliverables and mentor junior engineers.
  • Help define standards and processes that protect software quality.
  • Coordinate with other departments to line up activities and deliverables.
  • Build and extend the test infrastructure and continuous integration framework that teams share.
  • Identify best practices, set them as team principles and spread them across the team.
  • Write and maintain automated build and release scripts to an expert level.
  • Pick up new build and release techniques and methods, then teach them to the team.
  • Work with developers and stakeholders to ship quality software through the build and deployment system.
  • Guide teammates in diagnosing bugs and working out fixes.
  • Champion industry best practices that improve build, release and continuous integration and delivery.
  • Lead and coordinate a team of DevOps and build and release engineers, giving technical direction, setting workload priorities, coaching them and supporting them so release and deployment goals are met.
  • Grow the team through mentoring, knowledge sharing, performance coaching and encouraging DevOps practices across the organization.
  • Work with program and product teams to prioritise, plan and deliver DevOps work.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering or a related technical field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Substantial software development experience with a firm focus on DevOps principles and practices.
  • Experience leading, mentoring or coordinating technical teams, guiding engineers toward delivery results.
  • Strong leadership, collaboration and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence cross-functional teams and build a habit of continuous improvement.
  • Working knowledge of Python, Bash or PowerShell.
  • Extensive experience with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps or CircleCI.
  • Strong understanding of, and experience with, containers and orchestration such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with AWS, Azure or GCP.
  • Solid grounding in networking, Linux and Windows operating systems, and database systems.
  • Experience with configuration management tools such as Ansible, Puppet or Chef.
  • Familiarity with monitoring and logging tools such as Prometheus, Grafana or the ELK stack.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical and communication skills.
  • Comfortable working effectively in a quick-moving, collaborative environment.
