Description

You build and productionize data and AI solutions for customers on the company's platform as a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE), owning the architecture and leading design decisions across data engineering, AI and application development.

The role is hands-on and customer-facing, suited to builders who connect technology to business results. FDEs are billable, deliver to specification, and bring strong customer empathy, integrating with client systems and providing training.

Work is cross-functional with engineering, product and developer relations, helping set long-term strategic priorities.

The platform is used by more than 20,000 organizations worldwide, including adidas, AT&T, Bayer, Block, Mastercard, Rivian, Unilever and 70% of the Fortune 500. The company is headquartered in San Francisco with 30+ offices globally and offers a unified set of six product areas.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver production-grade systems for customer projects, including reference architectures, custom applications, data ingestion and ML/AI model integration.
  • Guide strategic customers through big data projects, from end-to-end design to building and deploying big data and AI applications.
  • Scope technical delivery with engagement managers, using input from the customer.
  • Advise customers on architecture and design, and start or build their projects so they understand, evaluate and adopt the platform.
  • Make architecture and design decisions that are secure and scalable, and that fit customer needs and company best practices.
  • Coordinate with the company's technical team, project manager, architect and customer team so the technical work meets customer needs.
  • Pass product and implementation feedback to engineering and support, and help resolve engagement-specific issues quickly.
  • Embed with customer teams and work with stakeholders from individual contributors to executives.
  • Build accelerators, frameworks and practices that other accounts can reuse, and that feed into the product roadmap.

Requirements

  • 6+ years in data engineering, data platforms and analytics, or software engineering.
  • Write code in Python, Scala, or JavaScript/TypeScript, and use modern frameworks.
  • Working knowledge of at least two cloud ecosystems (AWS, Azure, GCP), with expertise in at least one.
  • Deep experience with distributed computing on Apache Spark, including Spark runtime internals.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD for production deployments.
  • Working knowledge of MLOps, ML/AI models and AI APIs.
  • Have designed and deployed performant, production end-to-end data architectures and applications that combine data pipelines, ML/AI models and user-facing interfaces.
  • Have delivered technical projects by managing scope, timelines and measurable outcomes, and turning complex concepts into actionable solutions.
  • Strong documentation and whiteboarding skills.
  • Experience with enterprise clients and resolving conflicts across a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Build skills in technical areas, and show curiosity, adaptability and eagerness to learn new technologies that support deploying and integrating the company's platform in customer projects.
  • Hold a certification in the company's platform.
