Description

The company makes the da Vinci Single Port (SP) system, which gives surgeons robot-assisted tools for reaching deep, narrow areas of the body through one small incision. The system combines several technologies, including 3D immersive vision, a real-time haptic interface and robotic manipulators.

This is a hands-on management role leading the software team that builds the user interface and underlying state machine for the SP system. You will work with interaction designers, human factors engineers, clinical engineers and others to build embedded software and graphical interfaces that make complex surgical equipment safe, simple to learn and trustworthy to use. You will take rough requirements and turn them into working solutions, with a strong focus on product quality. Success and accountability are shared across the team.

Responsibilities

  • Find and hire strong engineers, and mentor and train current and new team members through one-on-one coaching and team-wide programs.
  • Work with cross-functional groups such as Interaction Design, Human Factors, Clinical and Controls Engineering to understand UI needs, then build and track a bottom-up schedule that supports the business unit's top-down goals.
  • Own the full development lifecycle for the UI software team and its documentation, including negotiating requirements, assessing and mitigating risk, prototyping, development, testing and releases.
  • Promote good software practices such as code reviews, scrums, bug scrubbing meetings, coding conventions, continuous integration, defensive programming, static analysis and design patterns.
  • Lead technical design reviews.
  • Assess and update the software hazard analysis, and identify mitigations for hazardous situations.
  • Maintain traceability from software requirements and hazard analyses to module and system verification tests.

Requirements

  • You have experience recruiting, mentoring and managing teams of highly skilled engineers, and you can keep a team performing well.
  • You have worked through all phases of software development, from evaluation and planning through design, implementation, verification and validation, market launch and post-market.
  • You understand design input, design output, traceability and risk analysis.
  • You have hands-on experience building user interface software.
  • You work well across teams, and you communicate and document clearly.
  • You pay close attention to detail and build lasting working relationships across the organization.
  • You have used revision control systems such as SVN and Git, and issue tracking tools such as JIRA.
  • You hold a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
  • You have 10+ years of industry experience developing and supporting embedded systems.
  • You have 3+ years of industry experience managing a team of user interface software engineers.
  • Preferred: experience designing software in an FDA or other regulated industry, or for mission-critical applications.
  • Preferred: experience with UI design.
  • Preferred: experience with QNX, QML and Qt.
  • Preferred: experience with UML state machines.
  • Preferred: experience with Matlab, Python or other scripting languages.
  • Preferred: experience with build systems such as GNU Make, CMake and EMake.

Conditions

You may be required to show current proof of vaccination against certain diseases, including COVID-19. Requirements vary by role.

Some roles are subject to U.S. export controls under the Export Administration Regulations (15 CFR §743.13(b)), which may apply to candidates who are nationals of embargoed or sanctioned countries. Where this applies, the company may need an export license (which can take 3 to 6+ months) or a Technology Control Plan (typically adding 2 weeks). Final offers depend on an approved license and/or executed plan before the start date, and candidates will be told what is needed.

The company considers applicants with arrest and conviction records in line with fair chance laws.

Candidates who do not live, and do not plan to live, in Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina or Tennessee are given preference.

The level of the role may differ from the one listed, depending on business need and the selected candidate's experience, knowledge and skills. Pay is based mainly on the level the role is filled at and the candidate's qualifications, within legal limits.
