Description

The role is open only to candidates in the Seattle, WA area in the US.

This is a hybrid role. Office days are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and you will be on site at least 3 days a week at the casual, pet-friendly office.

You will lead the DevOps team, which manages source control, CI/CD pipelines, Terraform, release tooling, and pipeline secrets and certificates for the company's engineering teams on Azure.

You will hire and grow the team, plan and track its work, and oversee the vendor engineers. You will work with software engineering leads, Internal Audit, and Information Security, and you need enough hands-on depth to review pipeline and Terraform changes and make design decisions with the team.

The company provides medical insurance for cats and dogs across North America.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit, coach, and manage the performance of DevOps engineers.
  • Define code review, testing, and release standards for the team's own code.
  • Plan two-week sprints and oversee the DevOps request queue in Jira Service Management.
  • Decide with engineering leads how pipelines, Terraform, and release tooling are designed and operated.
  • Build self-service tools so engineering teams can deploy and configure their own services without raising tickets.
  • Run pipeline change controls, including approvals, separation of duties, and audit evidence, together with Internal Audit and Information Security.
  • Oversee the vendor team's scope, quality, and delivery.
  • Report monthly on ticket volume, SLA performance, and delivery metrics.
  • Lead incident response and reviews for pipeline failures, and join the on-call rotation.

Requirements

  • 3+ years managing software engineers.
  • 7+ years of hands-on work with CI/CD (Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions), Terraform, and Azure.
  • Able to read and review YAML pipelines, Terraform, PowerShell or Bash, and.NET build configuration.
  • Have built internal tools or templates that other engineering teams adopted.
  • Have run change controls under SOX, SOC 2, PCI, or a similar audit.
  • Have managed contractors or a vendor team.
  • Have run a Jira Scrum team and reported on metrics such as DORA.
  • Understand Git branching, pull request policies, Key Vault, managed identity, and OIDC federation.
  • Have moved a company from Azure DevOps to GitHub, or off Octopus Deploy.
  • Experience with Backstage or another developer portal.
  • Experience administering Terraform Cloud.
  • Experience with Datadog or Application Insights, and with setting SLOs.
  • Experience with SonarCloud or dependency scanning in pipelines.
  • Background in insurance or financial services.
