The Space Division builds ground software that lets operators plan missions, monitor telemetry and process data from satellite constellations. The team's software supports mission-critical capabilities for national protection and exploration.

The Space Systems team is hiring a Software Test Engineer to verify and validate mission-critical satellite ground software. You will write and run manual and automated tests that check functionality, performance and reliability across the development lifecycle. You will work with the Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mission Operations and DevSecOps teams, and you will help with customer demonstrations and operational events that show the ground system's capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Build, run and upkeep automated tests for a mission-critical satellite ground system.
  • Check software against requirements using simulated mission conditions.
  • Create automated feature, capability, regression and end-to-end test suites.
  • Extend and modernise automated test frameworks to raise software quality, test coverage and CI/CT practice.
  • Work with Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mission Operations and DevSecOps across the development lifecycle.
  • Work with Mission Operations to confirm capabilities and cover scenarios that resemble real satellite flight operations.
  • Help with customer demonstrations and mission events by confirming the ground system is verified, reliable and ready to use.
  • Write tools and scripts that speed up verification, automation and test runs.
  • Find, record and fix software defects found during integration and verification.
  • Take part in Agile work, including sprint planning, reviews and retrospectives.

Requirements

  • Level 2 (Engineer Software Test): a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field and 2 years of professional experience, or a Master's degree. An additional 4+ years of experience may be considered in place of a degree.
  • Level 2: active U.S. Government Top Secret security clearance at the time of application, current and within scope.
  • Level 2: working knowledge of software development, including C, Python and Bash scripting.
  • Level 2: experience designing or running automated tests, such as framework design, CI integration or regression suites.
  • Level 2: basic understanding of space operations.
  • Level 2: experience breaking down requirements and turning complex ones into clear, runnable test steps and procedures.
  • Level 3 (Principal Engineer Software Test): a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field and 5 years of professional experience, a Master's degree and 3 years, or a PhD and 1 year. An additional 4+ years of experience may be considered in place of a degree.
  • Level 3: active U.S. Government Top Secret security clearance at the time of application, current and within scope.
  • Level 3: a proven record delivering complex automated test solutions in a regulated or classified environment.
  • Level 3: working knowledge of software development, including C, Python and Bash scripting.
  • Level 3: strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work across hardware engineering, software development and mission operations teams.
  • Preferred: Top Secret SCI is strongly preferred.
  • Preferred: experience with Git-based version control and tools such as Git, GitLab, Bitbucket, Jira and Confluence.
  • Preferred: experience building automated tests and adding them to CI/CD pipelines with tools such as Jenkins, GitLab CI, TestComplete, PyTest, Google Test (gTest), Robot Framework or similar.
  • Preferred: familiarity with cloud-native architecture (AWS), containers and orchestration such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Preferred: experience using modern engineering practices, including DevSecOps and AI-assisted development tools (for example GitHub Copilot, Cursor or ChatGPT), to improve software quality, test automation and defect analysis.
