Software Engineer

Description

The company is hiring a Software Engineer to join the Editorial Tools & Services team. The role suits someone who wants to build skills in AI-assisted code generation.

You will design and deploy software applications with an AI-first approach, working with cross-functional teams to meet customer needs. Core development comes first, using programming languages and development tools with a focus on AI-generative tools. You will also learn to integrate and consume APIs, and gain working knowledge of infrastructure-as-code, container basics, CI/CD pipelines, and AI concepts and their uses.

This position is open to support the business as it changes.

Responsibilities

• Work with product and business teams to understand business requirements, turn them into technical designs, and write functional and technical specifications.
• Research new software technologies that could improve application performance and development efficiency, lower cost, and maintain quality, working alongside development leads.
• Find practical, clean solutions to complex problems.
• Write technical specifications and documentation.
• Take part in team and status meetings and project planning sessions, where you analyze development needs, suggest design options, and break work down with estimates.
• Help with software releases.
• Build high-quality, fast, well-documented, and resilient features with your team and others.
• Work with QA to write test plans and test cases, decide how testing is run, carry out tests, and find and fix defects.
• Work with the systems operations team to keep systems stable and highly available.

Requirements

• A bachelor's degree in computer science or engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• 2, 4 years of professional software development experience.
• Working experience with C,.NET Core, NodeJS, or Python, plus cloud development, ideally on AWS.
• Experience in Agile or Scrum teams.
• Enthusiasm for AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, ChatGPT, or similar, for coding, testing, refactoring, debugging, and documentation.
• The ability to review AI-generated code and confirm it is correct, maintainable, secure, and performant.
• Familiarity with CI/CD, Git, code reviews, debugging, logging, and production support.
• Some design skill and knowledge of common design patterns.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to set priorities well.
• A customer-first approach to building software.
• Clear written and spoken communication with engineers, business analysts, managers, and business colleagues.

Conditions

Hybrid work model for office-based roles, with a mix of office and remote work.

Base pay for Ontario, Canada is $82,100 CAD to $132,100 CAD. Where you sit in that range depends on your knowledge, skills, and experience, and on internal equity.
