Software Engineer - AML Risk

The AML Risk team sits inside the AML Squad and builds detection systems and controls that flag possible money laundering and terrorist financing across products and regions.

The team relies on data and an understanding of criminal behaviour to build detection controls and alerts. Because criminal methods change quickly, the controls are updated regularly to catch more real risk, cut false positives and keep the customer experience smooth.

You would own components and medium-sized projects, working alongside engineers, product managers, data scientists, analysts and AML subject matter experts.

The company's products are built for speed, low cost and convenience, which criminals can also exploit. The IMF estimates that up to 5% of world GDP is laundered each year.

Responsibilities

• Build and improve AML detection controls and the systems behind them.
• Take work from design through implementation, deployment and ongoing support.
• Write tested, maintainable code that runs safely in production.
• Use data to define problems, check that solutions work and measure results.
• Review code, improve documentation and help shape engineering standards.
• Design for scalability, observability, privacy, security, reliability and cost.
• Work with product managers, data scientists, analysts and AML experts to turn risk knowledge into working controls.
• Share progress, risks and trade-offs clearly with the team.
• Decide when to work alone and when to ask for help, and help others get unblocked.
• Give and take constructive feedback to support a strong engineering culture.
• Main stack: Java, Spring Boot and Kafka, used for distributed services, asynchronous processing and data-heavy systems at scale.

Requirements

• 2, 5 years of experience building backend, distributed or data-intensive systems.
• Able to deliver medium-sized projects on your own, with sound judgment on scope and quality.
• Comfortable running production systems, including testing, monitoring and operational ownership.
• Solid skills in writing maintainable code and working through code review.
• Understand how engineering work affects customers and the business.
• Use data to make decisions and check whether changes work.
• Know when to drive a task yourself and when to collaborate for a better result.
• Communicate clearly and constructively, and accept feedback.
• Experience with AML or financial crime is preferred but not required.
• Experience running machine learning and/or large language models in production is preferred but not required.

Conditions

Starting salary is €4250 to €5750 gross per month, plus Restricted Stock Units (RSUs).
