Software Engineer - Stack (AWS, Java, JavaScript, TypeScript)

Description

The team builds cloud-based, customer-facing software at a large financial company, and this role is at the center of a major company-wide transformation.

You will work in a fast-paced, collaborative and iterative setting where you solve complex business problems with real customer impact.

Responsibilities

• Lead a set of varied technology projects and a team of developers experienced in distributed microservices and full-stack systems, building solutions that address regulatory requirements.
• Stay current on technology trends, try out and learn new tools, take part in internal and external technology communities, and mentor other engineers.
• Work with digital product managers to deliver resilient cloud-based solutions that give millions of Americans better control of their finances.
• Work with languages such as Java, Scala, Python, Go, Node.js, JavaScript and TypeScript, open source relational and NoSQL databases, Docker and Kubernetes container orchestration, and a range of AWS services.
• Set technical direction across Agile teams and define standards for design, development and operations.
• Work with architects to define service boundaries, integration patterns and reusable frameworks.
• Find areas for improvement, make targeted refactors, and help reduce technical debt and improve system performance.
• Shape long-term technology strategy by assessing new tools and practices, in an environment where teams build and run what they create.

Requirements

• A bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or a related quantitative field such as statistics, economics, operations research, analytics, mathematics or engineering.
• At least 4 years of software engineering experience. Internships do not count.
• At least 2 years of experience with public cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), cloud-based productivity tools or virtualization technologies.
• Preferred: a master's degree in computer science or a related field.
• Preferred: 7+ years of coding experience in more than two of Go, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Rust, C and Scala.
• Preferred: 3+ years working with databases and database management systems.
• Preferred: 3+ years with AWS, GCP, Azure, cloud-based productivity tools or virtualization technologies.
• Preferred: 4+ years contributing to open source frameworks.
• Preferred: 3+ years with front-end JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks.
• Preferred: 4+ years building synchronous and asynchronous APIs.
• Preferred: 3+ years with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code and automated testing frameworks.
• Preferred: 3+ years using Git-based version control such as Git, GitHub or Bitbucket.
• Preferred: 3+ years troubleshooting technical issues in cloud environments.
• Preferred: experience with modern AI-based coding tools and IDE copilots.
• Preferred: 1+ year mentoring engineers and supporting their professional growth on technical teams.
• Preferred: 1+ year using observability to find and fix performance bottlenecks in distributed systems.
• Preferred: experience with interactive AI tools that go beyond basic code completion to boost productivity.
• Preferred: experience leading cross-functional engineering efforts or large-scale technical initiatives.
• Preferred: experience setting and enforcing coding standards and design patterns across teams.

Conditions

Base salary in McLean, VA is $197,300 to $225,100 per year for the Full-stack Engineer 4 level. Pay in other locations follows that location's range, and the exact offer appears in the offer letter.

Part-time pay is prorated based on agreed regular hours.

The role is also eligible for performance-based incentive pay, which may include cash bonuses and or long-term incentives. Incentives may be discretionary or non-discretionary depending on the plan.
