The company supplies in-store retail solutions to large retailers. It is a billion-dollar global firm based in Research Triangle Park, NC, and the worldwide installed market share leader in this area.
This hands-on Software Engineer IV role covers full delivery of solutions for major retail platforms, from building the code to owning the work after release.
You will work under Dual-Track Agile, prototyping and testing feasibility on the Discovery Track and running the Delivery Track to keep quality, traceability and measurable results on target.
The ideal person is a senior engineer who writes code every day, builds prototypes without being asked, uses AI and agent tools across the lifecycle, and leads technical discussions with clients.
Responsibilities
Use AI and agent workflows in your daily work to speed up design, prototypes, code, test cases, specifications and automated checks.
Apply AI-assisted development in your own work, show the team good practice, and make sure generative AI tools are used ethically and responsibly.
Take end-to-end ownership of delivery across both tracks: build validated prototypes, contribute to formal designs, break work into deliverables, and ship technical work that gets accepted.
Lead the Discovery Track by writing working prototypes and demoing them to check feasibility and get stakeholders aligned before full build.
Turn discovery results into delivery backlog items and work with implementation teams so design intent, code quality and non-functional requirements hold through delivery.
Contribute to technical design across products and integrations, including ADRs, interface contracts, data models, sequence diagrams, migration and rollback plans, and traceability matrices, working with architects on wider governance.
Act as the main technical lead in client engagements: run workshops, present solutions, make trade-off decisions, secure approvals, and serve as subject-matter expert for assigned platform areas.
Build critical components and complex features on modern retail platform stacks, set the code quality standard through your own work, and review and approve implementation teams' deliverables.
Apply engineering standards, reusable integration patterns and non-functional requirements such as security, scalability and observability across client solutions.
Mentor engineers on AI-assisted development, Dual-Track workflows, specification-driven design and platform practice, mainly through pair programming, code reviews and leading by example.
Help shape platform and product strategy by finding reusable assets, API-first designs and technical gaps that need investment.
Own risk analysis and mitigation for technical decisions, including backward compatibility, data integrity and compliance constraints.
Requirements
A bachelor's degree in computer science or engineering, plus 8+ years of experience.
Hands-on use of AI-assisted tools and workflows, such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor or Claude Code, for design, coding, test generation and documentation.
8+ years of professional software development, with daily hands-on coding and prototyping in modern stacks.
8+ years building cloud-native, microservices or event-driven systems, with Azure experience or equivalent cloud platforms.
Strong skills in technologies such as Java/Spring Boot, TypeScript and React or Vue.
Proven record of owning end-to-end delivery of medium-to-large projects, including design, build and post-release operational responsibility.
Track record of building production code, prototypes and reference implementations to prove solution feasibility.
Strong experience with REST/OpenAPI, messaging platforms, and SQL or NoSQL databases.
Hands-on skill with CI/CD, containers, Docker, Kubernetes, deployment tooling, automated testing and AI/agentic workflows to speed up the lifecycle.
Practical experience with generative AI and AI-assisted development tools, such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code or Cursor, with measurable delivery impact.
Strong stakeholder communication, able to run workshops, present technical solutions and work across business and engineering teams.
Proven record of mentoring engineers, doing thorough code reviews and promoting engineering best practice across teams.
Preferred: strong retail platform knowledge, such as POS systems and store operations.
Preferred: certifications such as Azure Developer Associate, Azure Solutions Architect or equivalent cloud credentials.
Preferred: strong grasp of advanced security practices and compliance requirements in enterprise systems.
Preferred: experience leading Dual-Track Agile, managing both tracks and turning discovery results into actionable backlog items.
Preferred: experience contributing to platform strategy, reusable assets and API-first designs.
Preferred: expertise in formal or machine-readable specifications, such as OpenAPI, UML+OCL, TLA+ or equivalent, to guide implementation and enable automated validation.
