Description

This is a hands-on support engineering role for business-critical applications and platforms used across a large retail branch network.

You will keep desktop services, web applications and mainframe-connected systems stable, secure and working for the people who depend on them.

The environment mixes long-established and current technologies, so you need to be comfortable working from the front end down through the supporting layers.

The company is a large North American bank serving more than 27 million households and businesses in Canada, the United States and abroad, with over 95,000 colleagues.

You will work alongside engineering, infrastructure, release management, security, control and business teams.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate and fix production incidents, service requests and user questions of medium to moderate complexity, and act as the escalation point for front-line support.
  • Read application logs, system behaviour, alerts and dependencies to find root causes and restore service quickly.
  • Troubleshoot Windows services and applications across a large managed device fleet, including device settings, registry, environment and system conditions on remote endpoints.
  • Look into connection, session and access problems for mainframes reached through terminal emulation software.
  • Watch application and platform health, spot recurring problems, and propose changes that improve reliability, performance, scalability and efficiency.
  • Help configure, administer, maintain, deploy and release applications to enterprise standards, including packaging and distributing software to managed devices.
  • Coordinate with engineering, infrastructure, release, security and business partners to diagnose issues and resolve them on time.
  • Take part in incident, problem and change processes, recording findings, remediation steps and known errors.
  • Test changes and releases, including regression work and pilot device validation, before they reach production.
  • Make reviewed code and configuration changes to supported applications yourself rather than sending every defect to development.
  • Write and update technical documentation, operating procedures, troubleshooting guides and knowledge articles.
  • Find recurring support tasks to automate, and improve monitoring, diagnostics and operational processes.
  • Support technology currency work, including framework and dependency upgrades and the testing that goes with them.
  • Escalate significant risks, service impacts and unresolved technical issues through the right channels.
  • Share knowledge across the team and help build consistent engineering and support practices.
  • Join a rotating on-call schedule and provide occasional out-of-hours release support.
  • Keep up with emerging technologies, engineering practices, security requirements and enterprise standards that apply to the environment.

Requirements

  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical and problem-solving skills across applications and their supporting components.
  • Experience supporting enterprise applications or platforms in a production environment.
  • Ability to read application and system logs and use monitoring or diagnostic tools to investigate issues.
  • Working knowledge of the software development lifecycle, release management, incident management and change management.
  • Working knowledge of scripting or programming languages and SQL.
  • Understanding of application architecture, APIs, databases, infrastructure and system integrations.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, able to explain technical issues to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Able to manage several priorities, work independently on moderately complex tasks, and collaborate across teams.
  • Clear focus on service reliability, security, quality and continuous improvement.
  • Undergraduate degree, postgraduate degree or technical certificate in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Approximately 5+ years of relevant experience in technology, engineering, application support or production support.
  • Preferred: experience with automation is an asset.
  • Preferred: experience supporting a large managed endpoint or desktop fleet, including software distribution tooling.
  • Preferred: familiarity with mainframe access and terminal emulation, including session configuration and keyboard mapping.
  • Preferred: exposure to both established and current technology stacks, including legacy frameworks alongside modern architectures.
  • Preferred: experience with modern front-end frameworks sufficient to diagnose user interface defects.
  • Preferred: exposure to cloud platforms, CI/CD pipelines, automation and modern application architectures.
  • Preferred: prior financial services experience, particularly in retail banking operations.
