Description

The company is hiring a software engineer in Bristol for its UK software engineering and systems integration team, which works across its defence, commercial aircraft, global services and uncrewed technology businesses.

The team builds synthetic environment subsystems, mission systems capability, autonomous behaviours, ground control system upgrades, technical publications and in-house tools for defence platforms. It also works on commercial aircraft modifications, onboard network systems, cabin interiors and supplemental type certification.

This role supports the growing commercial seat certification statement of work and contributes to capability across the defence portfolio.

You start on the simulation programmes, which cover air, land and maritime, with the option to move into other areas of the software engineering portfolio later.

The engineering group researches advanced technology and designs, develops and certifies software and subsystems. It is growing quickly.

Defence and security work covers autonomous systems, training and simulation, cyber, space, and intelligence and security, at company and customer sites across the UK.

The pace is quick and varied. The team values a healthy work-life balance, openness, collaboration, innovation, safety and getting work right first time.

Responsibilities

  • Design, architect and build simulation models, visualisations, virtual environments and frameworks that improve testing of software and hardware across the full product lifecycle.
  • Work with stakeholders to define simulation requirements and the dynamics of the systems being simulated.
  • Carry out design, modelling, simulation, testing and analysis to assess and improve system performance, and collect and process data for simulations.
  • Verify and refine simulation code, models, test procedures and test environments, run test procedures, and record results by comparing models against real-world data, test data, benchmarks or similar models.
  • Write and maintain documentation for code, algorithms, specifications and simulation models.
  • Work with cross-functional engineering teams to integrate simulation software with hardware devices and systems.
  • Bring current and emerging technologies, tools, frameworks and methods into the simulation software environment.
  • Modernise, migrate, sustain and update simulation software so legacy systems run on new operating systems.
  • Manage simulation software projects.
  • Apply and improve integration best practices, processes and tools that speed up software integration.
  • Certify software to DO-178 for airborne systems, supporting equipment certification.
  • Review software data items with suppliers and company teams.
  • Take part in and contribute to planning (SOI-1), requirements and design (SOI-2), verification (SOI-3) and final compliance review (SOI-4) to meet FAA or other certification authority requirements.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited course in engineering, engineering technology (including manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science or computer science.
  • Ability to obtain security clearance.
  • Preferred: 5+ years working as, or alongside, a Designated Engineering Representative (DER), Technical Standard Order (TSO) certification specialist, EASA/FAA compliance verification engineer (CVE) or equivalent.
  • Preferred: 5+ years on RTCA DO-178 B, C or D software considerations for airborne systems and equipment certification, with a focus on embedded software.
  • Preferred: 5+ years across software lifecycle data items and standards such as DO-330 and DO-331.
  • Preferred: 5+ years developing, documenting and maintaining architectures, requirements, algorithms, interfaces and designs for software systems.
  • Preferred: 5+ years assisting software engineering projects.
  • Preferred: experience with agile planning tools such as JIRA, GitLab or similar.
  • Preferred: domain expertise in interior cabins, seats, in-flight entertainment or onboard network systems.
  • Preferred: 5+ years across the software development lifecycle and standards such as ISO9001.
  • Preferred: solid understanding of distributed interoperability simulation protocols used in defence collective training, such as DIS and HLA.
  • Preferred: strong understanding and experience of COTS simulation and training environment development, execution, verification, validation and deployment.
  • Preferred: familiarity with physics-based modelling and simulation systems engineering principles.
  • Preferred: proficiency in C++, Lua scripting or a similar programming language.
  • Preferred: strong object-oriented programming and software design skills.
  • Preferred: strong version control experience with tools such as Git or Bitbucket.
  • Preferred: knowledge of agile development methodologies.
  • Preferred: familiarity with DevOps, automation and CI/CD concepts.
  • Preferred: strong testing framework and unit testing skills, and the ability to guide junior team members.
  • Preferred: ability to quickly resolve complex problems.
  • Preferred: ability to build and maintain a broad network of business and cross-functional relationships.
  • Preferred: experience with production software release processes.
