Staff Software Engineer, Growth

Description

The company is a consumer energy platform where homeowners can find, buy, finance, install, monitor and manage home energy products and services in one place. It covers solar, battery storage, HVAC, heat pumps and more, and serves hundreds of thousands of homeowners across 30+ states.

You will set the technical direction for Growth, the area that shapes how homeowners discover and choose the company. That covers the digital acquisition experience, the multi-product entry point, and the funnel that converts interested leads into qualified appointments. You will design and build the APIs and services in TypeScript and Node.js, resolve difficult architecture questions across teams, and help engineers do their best work, working alongside Product and Design.

This is a hands-on individual contributor role. You will set direction, write core code, and raise the standard for the engineers around you. The teams use AI tools in their work, and you will help them use those tools well.

Responsibilities

• Own the architecture for Growth, state trade-offs openly, and get Product, Design and engineering aligned on it.
• Design and implement APIs, services and web experiences in TypeScript and Node.js that move interested homeowners toward a qualified appointment.
• Build instrumentation and experimentation into every release, and use the results to choose next steps.
• Define testing and CI/CD standards, diagnose production issues, and propose lasting fixes.
• Write design docs that resolve cross-team architecture questions and lead design reviews.
• Mentor engineers and tech leads through code review, pairing and design feedback.
• Work with product managers, designers, marketing, QA and platform teams to ship solutions people use.
• Help shape the company's engineering standards and guide responsible use of AI coding tools.

Requirements

• At least 8 years of professional software engineering experience, including time as a Staff or lead engineer owning a system that several teams use.
• Strong TypeScript and JavaScript skills.
• Production experience with Node.js and Express, including designing and consuming REST APIs.
• Hands-on experience with MongoDB or another document database.
• Solid knowledge of web fundamentals: HTML, CSS, security and performance.
• Strong testing habits, plus experience with CI/CD and Git.
• A record of design docs that settled cross-team architecture questions, and of helping engineers grow.
• Clear written and verbal communication with people who are not engineers.
• Practical knowledge of agentic engineering.
• Preferred qualifications: React and single-page apps; NestJS or Fastify; web experimentation and analytics; authentication and authorization patterns such as OAuth and JWT; Docker and a major cloud provider; microservice or event-driven systems.
