Service Reliability Engineer

Description

The company is a technology and entertainment business and a subsidiary of a larger parent group. It delivers hardware and network services to more than 100 million people and owns well-known entertainment intellectual property.

The team is part of the cloud gaming service effort. It shapes design and operations decisions to keep the service stable.

SREs own production, care about the quality of production code, and manage deployments. They are involved from the start of software development to make sure services are ready to run and stay stable.

The role suits someone who works independently and takes part in decisions at several levels, and who gives clear, critical feedback on the service at each stage of its operational life.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical discussions on improving reliability and scalability.
• Help write High Level Designs (HLDs) for new products and platforms.
• Coach junior SREs so they can succeed.
• Lead incident response and post-mortems for your assigned service team.
• Work with engineers across functions to decide which reliability work comes first, including technical debt and toil.
• Write code that improves reliability.
• Build automation that cuts recurring toil.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in software development, Linux systems administration, or both.
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Able to join an on-call rotation.
• Skilled as a Linux production systems engineer, with experience running large-scale web services infrastructure.
• Programming experience in at least one of: Python (preferred), Bash, Go, Java, C++, or Rust.
• Experience with at least 3 of the following areas: distributed data storage at scale (Hadoop, Ceph); NoSQL at scale (MongoDB, Redis, Cassandra); data aggregation (ElasticSearch, Kafka); scaling and running high-availability RDBMS (PostgreSQL, MySQL); monitoring, alerting, and incident management tools (Prometheus, Grafana); Kubernetes and/or AWS deployment and management; large-scale software distribution and package management; configuration management (Ansible, SaltStack, Puppet, Chef).
• Performance analysis and load testing for software. QA or SDET experience is a plus.
