Description

The team supports the ground-based strategic deterrent program (GBSD) in the company's Strategic Deterrent Systems division, within Defense Systems. The work covers sustainment, development, production and deployment of hardware and system changes for Air Force ICBM ground and airborne launch control systems, launch facilities and related infrastructure.

This is a principal-level role based in Roy, Utah or Huntsville, Alabama. You would join the safety engineering group and help add system safety engineers to it.

Your job is to shape designs so they meet safety expectations and requirements. You would analyze designs on your own and recommend features that control or eliminate hazards.

The role may involve travel, about 10% of the time.

Responsibilities

  • Take an active part in designing products, systems, support equipment and facilities.
  • Write functional specifications and set safety requirements for the systems assigned to you.
  • Prepare safety documents as needed for customer and test or operational range requirements.
  • Audit operational areas and report on how well the system safety program is working.
  • Weigh how system safety requirements interact with other concept design and development requirements, so the program stays as cost effective as possible.
  • Generate or review design artifacts that support system safety analyses, helping mature weapon system designs for safety and supporting flight test and airworthiness of complex systems.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in a STEM field (science, technology, engineering or math) plus at least 5 years of related experience. A master's degree lowers that to 3 years, and a PhD lowers it to 1 year.
  • US citizenship and an active DoD Secret clearance when you apply. The clearance must be current, within scope, with an investigation dated within the last 6 years.
  • The ability to obtain and keep Special Access Program (SAP) approval within a timeframe the company considers reasonable for its business needs.
  • At least 1 year of using DO-178 or DO-254 in design development.
  • At least 1 year of C/C++, Java, object oriented design or similar software development.
  • At least 1 year of using MIL-STD-882E to carry out preliminary, functional, subsystem, system, operating and support hazard analyses.
  • Clear written and spoken English.
  • Deep expertise in MIL-STD-882E, DO-178, DO-254, software development, design development or comparable systems engineering work.
  • Experience generating or reviewing design artifacts for system safety analyses on weapon systems and flight test or airworthiness work on complex systems.
  • Preferred: at least 1 year of using MIL-STD-882E or similar processes for hardware or software design development.
  • Preferred: experience leading a team through software safety processes in the Engineering and Manufacturing Development phase.
  • Preferred: experience developing in an Agile environment.
  • Preferred: Model Based Systems Engineering experience.
  • Preferred: experience developing missile flight systems software.
  • Preferred: an Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certificate.
  • Preferred: weapon system experience, such as Minuteman III or similar military or industry work.
  • Preferred: an active Top Secret clearance with an investigation in the last 6 years.

Conditions

Full-time position on a 9/80 schedule: nine-hour days Monday through Thursday, with every other Friday off.

Relocation assistance may be available, and the company may offer a competitive relocation package.

The application window is estimated at 20 days from the posting date, but it may close earlier or later depending on business needs and the number of qualified candidates.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental and vision coverage, a 401k, life insurance, paid time off, educational assistance, employee discounts, health and wellness resources, and employee assistance and work and life programs.
  • Base salary range of $98,400.00 to $147,600.00. This is a general guide; the offer depends on scope, responsibilities, experience, education, skills and market conditions.
  • You may be eligible for overtime, shift differential and a discretionary bonus. Annual bonuses reward individual work and company results. Vice President and Director roles may also qualify for Long Term Incentives.
  • Other benefits include health, life and disability insurance, a savings plan, paid company holidays, and paid time off for vacation and personal matters.
