Description

The company is built by fans and brings anime and manga to a global audience of over 100 million people across more than 200 countries and territories. Its work spans streaming, theatrical releases, games, merchandise, and events.

You would join the Concepts Lab, the company's R&D and incubation group. The lab explores new ideas, technologies, and fan experiences, tests assumptions, and moves validated concepts into delivery teams.

You report to the VP of the lab. The lab runs in short cycles, from early discovery through beta execution, and the team is small, so your work is highly visible. The systems you build become the base the receiving team adopts, and the standards you set are what they inherit.

In year one, success means experiments that moved into long-term teams because their engineering held up and the handoff was clean.

Responsibilities

  • Take validated experiments into production by embedding in a delivery team for each engagement, working within its codebase, systems, and conventions to build the experiment to production quality.
  • Design, build, and ship the software behind experiments directly in production, turning unclear requests into a clear plan and milestones.
  • Build and deliver experiences in the lab's internal experimental environment, owning its reliability, its deployment path, and how quickly new experiments can be set up.
  • Own production health during each engagement, covering security patches, dependency upgrades, bug fixes, scaling, runbooks, and documentation, shared on a rotation across the team.
  • Set the technical bar for the lab's software work, including design reviews, code quality, test coverage, observability, cost management, and security.
  • Lead handoffs of validated experiments to the owning team, so each one arrives documented, supportable, and fully owned by its new team.
  • Mentor the engineers and contractors you work with, take part in hiring, and help shape how engineering builds software.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production systems.
  • Experience designing systems with multiple components across API or service boundaries, anticipating failure modes before customers feel them.
  • Production-grade Python, TypeScript, or both, and a record of building software other engineers chose to adopt because it made their work easier.
  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines with automated testing built in.
  • Use of AI, including agentic coding tools and workflows, to speed up complex delivery, refactors, and migrations while protecting correctness and production safety.
  • Operational ownership of services you built, including runbooks, diagnostics, and incident follow-through.
  • Experience in early-stage, ambiguous settings where you define the problem as well as solve it, and judgment about when to prototype versus build for the long term.
  • Experience in media, streaming, or gaming.
  • Experience in an innovation lab, incubation environment, or R&D organization.
  • Experience with agentic coding tools and frameworks such as Claude Code, Cursor, or similar, used across the full development cycle.
