Description

The company builds radar software for the Eurofighter Typhoon, the main front-line defence aircraft for the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain. Demand for future technology upgrades on the programme is strong, and the company is hiring software engineers to support it.

Hiring is at three grades: Engineer at £38000 to £50000, Senior Engineer at £45000 to £60000, and Principal Engineer at £54000 to £70000. Where the vacancy spans more than one grade, the successful candidate is appointed to one assessed grade, and the salary range is the one attached to that grade.

Pay sits within a grade-based framework with broad bands. The range shown is the approved band for the role, or a narrower hiring range inside it, and is checked against the external market. Offers above the standard range go through governance controls to keep internal pay fair.

The team is small and works on a specialised part of the radar software that affects the whole system. The work is technical: you dig into low-level detail and how the system works, solve problems, and deliver changes to a mature project with set requirements. You work closely with systems, integration and test engineers and report to internal stakeholders.

Are you an experienced software engineer who wants to develop software for the Eurofighter Typhoon in a specialist team?

Responsibilities

  • Take part in the full software lifecycle.
  • Write Ada, C++ and Python. Ada is widely used in defence and aerospace.
  • Write high quality, robust code. Document and record your work, keep it under configuration management, and report progress to your supervisor.
  • Write technical reports and documents, and prepare and present technical material to project stakeholders.
  • Follow the project plan and pick out its key elements.
  • Give the software team lead and project and engineering management clear, concise progress updates.
  • Work with the Software and Systems team and the wider integration teams. Find and fix real integration problems on a complex system.
  • Understand complex technical requirements and use them to design, implement and test agreed code changes.
  • Debug problems with debugging tools.

Requirements

  • Good quality industry experience and the ability to work on your own.
  • Experience across the full software development lifecycle.
  • Willingness to work in a small, multi-disciplinary integrated project team.
  • Working knowledge of source control and configuration tools such as Git or Bitbucket.
  • Recent industry experience with Ada, C++ or another relevant language is preferred. Java experience helps you get up to speed with Ada faster.
  • Experience in software design and architecture is preferred, or interest in getting into it.
  • Experience delivering software with agile methods and tools such as Jira and Confluence is preferred.
  • Ability to trace, diagnose and fix potential software faults, with familiarity with a debugger, is preferred.
  • Experience with static analysis and code coverage tools is preferred.
  • Knowledge of incremental development best practice is preferred.
  • Experience developing embedded software is preferred.
  • Past or current work in a heavily regulated sector such as defence, aerospace, automotive, medical, or oil and gas is preferred.
  • Experience writing and defining tests for software changes against requirements is preferred.
  • A STEM background with demonstrable interest in physics, mathematics or engineering, and familiarity with radar and tracking principles, is preferred.
  • Security clearance: the role requires pre-employment screening to the UK Government Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS). Additional National Security Vetting (NSV) may apply, which could include eligibility for the Security Check (SC) or Developed Vetting (DV). Guidance is on the company careers site under security and vetting.
