Description

The Play Software group builds technology-enabled play, where LEGO play sets are combined with electronic hardware and software to create a play experience.

You will sit within the Play Experience team, which is part of the Play Software organisation. The group is bringing advanced technology in-house and works across all technical teams, always keeping LEGO fans of all ages in mind.

Responsibilities

  • You will design and build software components for high-performance core engines and platforms, letting teams create play experiences that use motion, sound and colour detection.
  • Build robust, reusable software that brings tech-enabled toys to life.
  • Take ownership of key engine components and solve complex problems across the system.
  • Work with the Lead Engineer and other stakeholders to set up a solid, maintainable base for future features.
  • Design, implement, maintain and optimise the core engine through software components.
  • Own complex technical challenges, hands-on, across implementation, testing and issue resolution in the platform stack.
  • Find bottlenecks in constrained systems and fix them, improving performance, resource use and reliability.
  • Take part in technical design discussions, weigh implementation trade-offs and recommend architecture and component improvements.
  • Uphold engineering standards through code reviews, automated testing, documentation and continuous integration.
  • Work closely with Engineering Leads and System Architects from the software and firmware domains so your work runs efficiently on physical platforms.
  • Find ways to improve engineering processes and development workflows to raise team efficiency and software quality.

Requirements

  • Strong experience building complex systems, core platforms, frameworks or engines.
  • You can analyse hard technical problems, make engineering trade-offs and explain decisions clearly.
  • Strong software development skills, with fluent C++ and C.
  • Experience with Domain Specific Languages (DSL).
  • A track record of delivering engineering projects on time within a team, meeting objectives and milestones.
  • You balance user experience against technical constraints to deliver effective solutions.
  • Experience using task management software such as Jira.
  • Experience using GitHub for code management.
  • Experience with connected toys, wearables, IoT or other hardware-software products, including BLE, NFC/RFID, sensors and low-power devices. (Listed as an optional item in the original posting.)
  • Experience with game engines such as Unity, Unreal or Godot, and building designer-facing tools and data-driven content pipelines. (Listed as an optional item in the original posting.)
  • Audio programming or interactive sound design experience. (Listed as an optional item in the original posting.)
  • Experience designing play for children, including playtesting with kids and working within child safety and privacy regulations. (Listed as an optional item in the original posting.)
  • A passion for LEGO play and curiosity about inventing new forms of play. (Listed as an optional item in the original posting.)
  • Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis. The company may amend or withdraw the role at any time, including before the advertised closing date, so apply early.
