Senior Software Engineer (Backend)

Description

The company runs a logistics marketplace that connects shippers and carriers, so freight moves more smoothly across the industry.

The team builds distributed systems, real-time models and applications for carrier tools, large shipper portals, internal operations software, and pricing, matching and forecasting engines.

This senior role centres on backend services, microservices and APIs that stay reliable while handling complex business rules. You will work with product, operations and other engineering teams, help set architecture and backend standards, and mentor engineers.

The company helps businesses move freight more reliably and efficiently by combining technology, people and transport capacity, using real-time data from millions of shipments. It works with 1 in 3 Fortune 500 shippers across North America and manages over $17B in freight.

Responsibilities

• Design and maintain fast, high-volume microservices and distributed systems in Go, Java, Python, or C++.
• Set architecture direction, including data models and API contracts for fault-tolerant backend systems.
• Push for strong standards in backend testing, security, maintainable code and deployment pipelines.
• Work with product, operations and engineers to scope technical work, weigh trade-offs and deliver complex logistics features.
• Spot technical debt, bottlenecks and architectural limits early, and plan the platform's long-term growth.
• Coach engineers at every level, run thorough code and system design reviews, and encourage operational ownership.
• Investigate production failures in distributed systems, watch service health, and lead blameless post-mortems to improve availability.

Requirements

• A BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, or equivalent hands-on experience.
• At least 5 years of software engineering experience.
• Strong coding skills in one or more backend languages: Go, Java, Python, or C++.
• Experience building and scaling microservices and distributed systems that connect through APIs.
• A solid grasp of system performance, API design and data modelling.
• Experience with backend testing at the unit, integration and end-to-end levels.
• Preferred: knowledge of data structures and algorithms, and the ability to apply them practically in implementations.
• Preferred: experience with MySQL, SQL Server, or Oracle.
• Preferred: a track record of leading technical projects and mentoring engineers.
• Preferred: knowledge of the logistics and transportation industry.

For Chicago-based roles, the salary range is $152,000.00 - $186,000.00 per year.
