Description

This is a hybrid role based in Austin, TX at the IT Innovation Center, where you will be on site 3 to 4 days per week, Tuesday through Thursday.

You will join the brands and marketing software engineering team in the company's digital products engineering group. The team works with marketing leaders across the company to build easy-to-use tools that power engaging customer experiences at scale, including AI-powered discovery and search.

The team aims to quickly build, test, and launch new products that connect the company with current and future customers, increasingly on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Vertex AI Search. The team includes software and quality engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Help lead engineering work across planning, design and architecture, delivery, and ramp-up.
  • Build modern web applications that integrate with GCP-native services.
  • Design and build AI-powered search experiences using Vertex AI Search.
  • Work with product, marketing, and data/ML partners to run experiments, measure results, and improve search relevance and customer engagement.
  • Act as a tech lead: mentor less experienced engineers, drive technical decisions and trade-offs, build relationships with technical leaders on other teams, and help shape engineering culture and best practices.
  • Grow your skills across the full web stack, including client, framework, and services.
  • Write unit-tested, reviewed code that is checked in regularly for continuous integration and deployment.
  • Find and fix performance bottlenecks across the browser, edge, and cloud services.
  • Lead work to automate testing, quality gates, and delivery pipelines with a focus on reliability and observability.
  • Work on API, content management, edge, and cloud systems that power the company's brand and marketing experiences.
  • Promote engineering best practices and improvements to productivity and craftsmanship.
  • Design and build web applications and services on GCP using Cloud Run, GKE, Cloud Functions, Pub/Sub, Cloud Storage, Cloud SQL/Spanner, and BigQuery where they fit.
  • Implement and integrate Vertex AI Search for intelligent search, semantic retrieval, and content discovery across the company's digital products such as marketing sites, owner experiences, and support content.
  • Define and evolve search schemas, indexing pipelines, and relevance signals such as metadata, event telemetry, and personalization data to improve search quality and satisfaction.
  • Work with data science and ML partners to productionize and improve search and recommendation models on Vertex AI, including experimentation frameworks and A/B tests.
  • Build secure, robust APIs and backend services that expose search and recommendation features to web and mobile clients.
  • Work with product and UX to design search-centric experiences such as autocomplete, facets, filters, recirculation modules, and recommendations, guided by analytics and experiments.
  • Lead design and development of an enterprise-wide search platform that unifies discovery across brands, channels, and content sources, starting with a Vertex AI Search implementation.
  • Define abstraction layers, contracts, and interfaces for query models, result schemas, and relevance and signals APIs so the core search can later move to other engines, such as other cloud search services or self-hosted vector search, with minimal impact on clients and users.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 5 years of web application development experience.
  • Strong frontend and backend skills, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and one or more of Java, Python, or server-side JavaScript.
  • Hands-on experience designing and running production workloads on GCP, including Cloud Run, GKE, Cloud Functions, Pub/Sub, Cloud Storage, Cloud SQL/Spanner, and BigQuery.
  • Experience with AI-powered search or recommendation systems, ideally Vertex AI Search or similar semantic or vector search platforms.
  • Experience with system design, testing, debugging, automation, and performance optimization.
  • Preferred: Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Preferred: At least 7 years of experience building scalable, high-traffic web applications and services.
  • Preferred: Experience with ReactJS.
  • Preferred: Experience with Adobe Experience Manager, Akamai, and/or Microsoft Azure.
  • Preferred: Experience with Helm, Terraform, and ArgoCD.
  • Preferred: Direct experience with Vertex AI Search, including schemas, indexing, ingestion pipelines, tuning, and evaluation.
  • Preferred: Experience with LLM and embedding-based retrieval, RAG, experimentation, and personalization.
