Description

The company is a venture-backed startup in Winnipeg, Canada, using AI to make business TV more engaging and profitable, starting with bars and restaurants.

Its patented-style tech is not claimed; instead, its proprietary system uses computer vision to watch live TV and add context-aware ads, content and games, while automating the routine AV work venues handle each day.

The engineering team has grown quickly, but testing has not kept up. QA and test automation have sat inside the developer team, so regressions reach production more often and each team tests differently.

This role sets one testing plan and policy for the whole engineering organization, and you will also build the automation behind it.

You will own testing across the device (firmware, software and detection models), the web apps and the backend. You will report to the CTO and work closely with the VP of Software and the Firmware lead.

Responsibilities

  • Build a comprehensive automated test suite for one product area within your first few months, which then becomes the template for other teams.
  • Define the company's testing standard, including what gets automated and what counts as done for a feature from a testing standpoint, and win over every team.
  • Own the drop in production regressions, not just the process behind it.
  • Choose the right testing approach for detection models, firmware on the device, and the TypeScript and React web apps, then build automation to match.
  • Work with the CTO, VP of Software and Firmware lead so the testing plan fits how each team actually builds.

Requirements

  • Have built a testing suite yourself from scratch, not only maintained one someone else designed.
  • Know how to stand up testing infrastructure from nothing.
  • Be fluent in Playwright and Maestro, or similar tools, and able to write test plans for both new features and long-standing legacy code.
  • Understand that testing firmware and embedded systems differs from testing a web app, and be able to hold both in mind at once.
  • Be comfortable testing TypeScript, React and Android applications.
  • Be able to change how other engineers work, both by setting a standard and by getting people to follow it.
  • Have 5+ years in QA and test automation, including real ownership of a testing suite at a previous company.
  • Have hands-on experience with Playwright, Maestro or comparable frameworks.
  • Have written test plans and strategy for both new and existing features.
