Description

The Office of Technology and Innovation uses technology to expand opportunity, improve public safety and make city government work better across New York City.

The Public Interest Technology Crew is a new team at the office that builds technology, products and services to make New York City more affordable. The team designs, builds and launches public-facing products for New Yorkers.

This is a hands-on role for a senior product engineer. You will work across the stack to build resident-facing products, pairing closely with product managers, designers, user researchers, policy teams and other city employees to go from problem statements to working products.

You will write code across systems and connect to city agency data sources, including legacy systems, while working with policy and legal stakeholders. You will also help set engineering practices for the team, covering generative coding tools, productionizing work, documentation and handing products to other teams for production support, while balancing speed with the reliability expected of a city service.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build and ship applications from concept to launch, owning whole components end-to-end or focusing on specific areas such as frontend, backend, mobile or data pipelines.
  • Prototype rapidly, iterate on MVPs, and take products through pilot to public launch, making practical trade-offs between scope, quality and timing.
  • Build integrations with government data sources, from modern APIs and flat-file feeds to open data portals and older legacy systems that may need creative workarounds.
  • Take part in day-to-day product decisions with product managers, designers, engineers and other office staff, join user research and design reviews, and help with scoping and prioritization.
  • Work with the wider office on hosting, performance testing, accessibility audits and security reviews so products meet city quality and production standards.
  • Work with agency staff, policy advisors and legal counsel to turn complex eligibility rules and regulations into clear, accurate product logic.
  • Write clear technical documentation, runbooks and architecture notes so products can be maintained and extended after launch.
  • Build reusable patterns, components and infrastructure so each new project ships faster than the last.
  • Help shape engineering culture on a small, mission-driven team through code review, mentorship and onboarding of new hires.
  • Take on special projects and initiatives as assigned.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in computer science, information systems, engineering, mathematics or a related field, plus six years of satisfactory full-time experience in enterprise architecture, solutions architecture, network architecture and/or IT infrastructure systems; or
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college plus ten years of satisfactory full-time experience in enterprise architecture, solutions architecture, network architecture and/or IT infrastructure systems; or
