Description

The company is hiring a Senior Platform Engineer for the AV Cloud Engineering team, which sits within AV Core Infrastructure.

The team owns the core IaaS and PaaS layer that autonomous vehicle development and runtime environments depend on.

The role suits an engineer who sees cloud infrastructure as a product and wants to build a reliable platform that AV engineers find easy to use, so they can build, test and run work faster with less operational friction.

You will shape the platform capabilities, abstractions and self-service workflows behind AV workloads at scale, and turn broad infrastructure problems into durable engineering solutions.

The role is a good fit for engineers who want to build an internal platform for other engineers. It is less suited to candidates whose experience is mainly ticket-driven infrastructure support or one-off environment operations.

Responsibilities

  • Build and extend internal platform capabilities, self-service workflows, APIs and automation so the easiest route is the correct one for AV engineering teams.
  • Create abstractions that let product and research teams use complex infrastructure, including GPUs, without deep infrastructure knowledge.
  • Improve core platform primitives for traffic, service mesh, runtime configuration and connectivity across distributed AV workloads.
  • Cut toil and raise reliability with reusable tooling, declarative automation, clear service ownership, observability, and SLIs and SLOs.
  • Own large platform initiatives from problem definition through design, implementation and adoption.
  • Work with neighbouring AV infrastructure teams to reduce developer friction and improve the reliability of the platform engineers rely on.
  • Support a healthy engineering culture through design reviews, code reviews, mentoring and clear technical communication.

Requirements

  • Required: Deep expertise in Kubernetes on GKE and the Google Cloud Platform, including VPC and IAM.
  • Required: Hands-on experience building high-availability systems and managing the lifecycle of production-grade clusters.
  • Required: Solid software engineering and DevOps practice in Golang or Python, along with Terraform.
  • Required: Able to work independently in ambiguous situations and turn high-level requirements into clear technical tasks.
  • Required: A growth mindset, with ongoing upskilling and a belief that team capability grows through effort and coaching.
  • Required: Real experience balancing hardware-level performance, such as GPU passthrough, against clean cloud abstractions.
  • Minimum Qualifications (Must-Have): 5+ years of experience, or a proven record of defining and executing technical strategy across multiple teams, senior executives and front-line engineers.
  • Minimum Qualifications (Must-Have): A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum Qualifications (Must-Have): Hands-on production experience with Kubernetes and strong familiarity with at least one major cloud, such as GCP, AWS or Azure.
  • Minimum Qualifications (Must-Have): Strong software engineering skills in Go, Python or similar, with the ability to build reusable automation, services, APIs or controllers.
  • Minimum Qualifications (Must-Have): Experience designing, implementing and operating large-scale, high-availability distributed systems in production.
  • Preferred: Experience with service mesh technologies such as Istio, and with large-scale DNS or traffic management.
  • Preferred: Experience with GKE and the wider GCP ecosystem, including networking and IAM. Equivalent EKS/AWS or AKS/Azure experience is also valuable.
  • Preferred: Experience supporting AI/ML workloads or working with ML platforms and related tooling.
  • Preferred: Experience owning or influencing platform SLOs and availability targets in production.
  • Preferred: Experience driving technical strategy or cross-functional alignment across multiple teams.
