Description

This role supports, improves, and extends the embedded software build environment for a minimally invasive single port surgical robot.

You will keep the development pipeline running for small to mid-sized teams. That pipeline covers the compiler toolchain and build infrastructure, managed as infrastructure as code for environments that change often.

The work supports both legacy and upcoming embedded product pipelines.

The ideal candidate has proven experience, works on their own initiative, makes independent decisions, works across the organization, and gets results in a regulated environment.

Responsibilities

  • Automate infrastructure and run infrastructure as code practices, and maintain, troubleshoot, and improve the build tool pipelines.
  • Work with configuration release engineers, developers, DBAs, QA, and project managers across the software lifecycle to deliver strong technical infrastructure for external product delivery.
  • Handle daily administration of build systems, machines, and tools.
  • Watch emake builds proactively and fix problems, such as long build times caused by machines going down.
  • Set up Windows and Linux machines, physical or virtual, for emake builds, including new hires and replacement laptops.
  • Onboard new and existing engineers onto physical and virtual infrastructure.
  • Set up Bazel and CMake builds for new hardware and software.
  • Provide on-call support for critical applications when required.
  • Take part in building, running, and supporting infrastructure management and operations.
  • Set up infrastructure monitoring and health reporting that moves the system toward self-healing.
  • Extend a configuration, deployment, and monitoring framework with an IT engineer.
  • Optimize makefiles and build scripts.
  • Gather and define requirements with internal customers and the development team, and document the architecture.
  • Follow a formal design process using formal specifications, data flow diagrams, and other accepted design methods.
  • Build and manage a build pipeline with tools such as Ansible, Jenkins, BitBucket, and GitLab CI.
  • Review existing systems against industry standards and recommend improvements.
  • Improve system performance with a focus on high availability and scalability.

Requirements

  • Work well in a team and communicate clearly.
  • Have at least 5 years of experience in embedded build infrastructure management, systems or infrastructure work, or a related engineering field.
  • Have hands-on experience enabling Bazel builds for new hardware targets in existing embedded software infrastructure.
  • Have hands-on experience with observability tools such as ElasticSearch, Kibana, Fluentbit, and Logstash.
  • Script in Batch, Python, and Matlab, and use scripts to automate repetitive tasks.
  • Use bash on WSL, Linux, Cygwin, and Windows.
  • Be comfortable with version control systems such as Git and SVN.
  • Have experience with embedded toolsets such as cross compiler toolchains and GNU GCC, and with build systems and tools such as CMake, EMake, and Make.
  • Have hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and build tools such as Jenkins and BitBucket.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues with Windows diagnostic tools such as Wireshark and SMB, and Linux diagnostic tools such as pdb, strace, tcpdump, and dbg.
  • Have experience maintaining Linux and Windows infrastructure.
  • Hold a B.S. in Computer Science or a related technical major, or have equivalent experience.
  • Desired: At least 5 years of DevOps experience in Linux and Windows environments.
  • Desired: Strong programming skills in C, C++, and Python.
  • Desired: Knowledge of Perl is a plus.
  • Desired: Experience setting up and administering continuous integration.
  • Desired: A deep understanding of TCP/IP, HTTP, and HTTPS.
  • Desired: Familiarity with embedded Linux and RTOS.
