Description

The company designs, builds and runs the largest fleet of imaging satellites ever flown, and sells the data through a cloud platform to customers in commercial, environmental and humanitarian work. It builds the hardware, the data processing and the software itself, so it is both a space company and a data company.

The infrastructure solutions team is small and mixes operators and builders. It sits between the teams that build the platform and the teams that use it, and it has to win work from engineering teams one engagement at a time, because those teams are not required to use it. Its aim is to take infrastructure off every team's plate, so the company does not have to rebuild, secure and pay for it several times.

Most engagements start with a team that is blocked, in the middle of a migration, or joining the platform for the first time. Those teams often come with a proposed fix rather than the underlying problem, so a large part of the work is finding the real problem. You then own the work from diagnosis through the hands-on fix and the case for upstream changes, ending with a lasting artifact that keeps the next team from hitting the same problem.

The role suits someone who gets more satisfaction from helping ten teams move faster than from running one system, and who can work well with people who do not yet think they need help. The team is remote, with employees across several countries and offices in San Francisco, Washington DC, Germany, Austria, Slovenia and the Netherlands.

Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end engagements with engineering teams to diagnose and resolve complex infrastructure problems.
  • Build reference implementations, tooling and guidance that move teams off deprecated systems without disruption.
  • Serve as the main technical contact for new teams joining the core infrastructure.
  • Turn scattered solutions into supported, standard infrastructure offerings.
  • Design reusable libraries, Terraform modules and Helm charts for patterns that repeat across teams.
  • Add instrumentation and attribution tooling that shows infrastructure cost, usage and adoption.
  • Use feedback from engineers and recurring pain points to shape the infrastructure roadmap.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of professional experience in platform engineering, DevOps or site reliability engineering, including leading at least one cross-team project or migration.
  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience in technical enablement, developer experience or solutions architecture focused on internal developer productivity.
  • Hands-on experience running and maintaining production infrastructure.
  • Deep knowledge of Kubernetes, including workload optimisation and day-to-day operations.
  • Working knowledge of Google Cloud Platform or another public cloud, including compute, storage, quotas and capacity modes.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code (Terraform, Helm, ArgoCD) and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Proficiency in software development with Go or Python.
  • Ability to turn vague requirements into structured, actionable engineering tasks.
  • Strong written and spoken communication for technical documentation and work across functions.
  • Nice to have: experience running large-scale block storage (Persistent Disk, Hyperdisk, Ceph, SAN or equivalent) across a whole fleet rather than per service.
  • Nice to have: experience driving large migrations or deprecations that needed buy-in from teams outside your own reporting line.
  • Nice to have: experience in a consulting-style engineering role (solutions architecture, professional services or technical account engineering) applied to an internal platform.
  • Nice to have: familiarity with workflow orchestration (e.g. Temporal), batch and job-execution systems or large-scale data pipelines.
  • Nice to have: experience defining and measuring platform adoption through developer-productivity instrumentation, NPS or internal market share.
