Description

The company is building a new robotic platform for minimally invasive biopsy in the peripheral lung, aimed at diagnosing lung cancer earlier.

The role sits in the New Product Development Platform Software team and covers the embedded software for a new surgical robot.

You will work with a skilled team to design and build the embedded software platform.

The team values people who work well together, can take a project from early requirements to a finished solution, and care about high-quality output.

Responsibilities

  • Work with electrical, FPGA, manufacturing, service and clinical colleagues to set technical requirements, weigh design trade-offs, and deliver sturdy platform and infrastructure software.
  • Build and maintain embedded Linux software across its whole life, covering startup, configuration and diagnostics.
  • Develop communication middleware and system services for embedded platforms.
  • Write multi-threaded, distributed C/C++ applications.
  • Integrate third-party networked devices and design their APIs.
  • Extend existing software frameworks so they run on new processors, operating systems and hardware.
  • During early hardware bring-up, work with electrical engineers on the bootloader, kernel, device tree and driver layers.
  • Find and fix faults that cross hardware, OS, middleware and application layers, using gdb, JTAG, logic analyzers and oscilloscopes.
  • Read schematics, datasheets and hardware specifications to guide software design and debugging.
  • Design for robustness, fault detection, graceful degradation and serviceability.
  • Diagnose and resolve performance, latency and resource problems involving CPU, memory, I/O and networking.
  • Run root-cause analysis on system failures seen in development, manufacturing, clinical use or the field.
  • Take part in design verification and validation, and help move the product into manufacturing.
  • Join architecture discussions and design reviews, bringing a whole-system view.
  • Mentor junior engineers and set the example for code quality, debugging discipline and design practice.
  • Support cross-functional reviews, product demonstrations, and clinical or field activities when needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with 6+ years of industry experience, or Master's degree with 4+ years of industry experience, in computer science, computer engineering or a related engineering field.
  • 4+ years of hands-on work developing and supporting embedded systems in production.
  • Strong command of modern C/C++ (C++11 and later) for embedded and cross-platform code.
  • Experience developing and debugging embedded Linux systems, including multi-threaded applications.
  • Hands-on work with Linux kernel drivers, board support packages, device trees, bootloader integration and low-level hardware interfaces.
  • Experience connecting embedded Linux to FPGA, PCIe, DMA, custom ASICs or other high-throughput data paths.
  • Proficiency in Python 3 and Bash for tooling, automation and diagnostics.
  • Working knowledge of TCP/IP, CAN, I2C, SPI and serialization protocols such as protobuf.
  • Understanding of embedded architecture, modular design, inter-process communication and system interfaces.
  • Strong debugging skills across hardware, OS and distributed software.
  • Experience collaborating on complex, product-focused designs.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD, build automation and unit and integration testing.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Preferred: experience with embedded communication interfaces, networked device integration, protocol debugging and performance analysis.
  • Preferred: experience designing systems with real-time or near real-time constraints.
  • Preferred: knowledge of cybersecurity concepts such as secure boot, authentication, encryption and key management.
  • Preferred: experience across the full product lifecycle, from design and implementation through verification, validation and manufacturing transfer.
  • Preferred: experience developing software for FDA-regulated, safety-critical or mission-critical systems, including design controls, traceability, risk analysis and mitigation.
  • Preferred: hands-on work with networking and streaming technologies such as UDP, RTP, SRTP, SSL/TLS and GStreamer.
  • Preferred: experience with Yocto/OpenEmbedded, PetaLinux, cross-compilation or reproducible build systems.

Conditions

The company or its customers may require current proof of vaccination against certain diseases, including COVID-19. Requirements vary by role.

Some roles may be subject to U.S. export controls under 15 CFR §743.13(b). For those, any offer depends on an approved export license and/or an executed Technology Control Plan before the start date. Licensing can take 3 to 6+ months, and a Technology Control Plan typically adds 2 weeks.

Qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records are considered in line with fair chance laws.

Preference goes to qualified candidates who do not live, and do not plan to live, in Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina or Tennessee.

The role may be filled at a different job level than listed, depending on business need and the selected candidate's experience, knowledge and skills.

Pay is based mainly on the job level the role is filled at and the candidate's qualifications, consistent with applicable law.
