Description

The company's Cash Management team builds products that give banks control over how they fund international payments, settle with the company and convert currencies, which helps more partners and their customers use the company.

A bank might want to lock in an exchange rate now and release the funds later, or send a payment first and settle with the company afterwards. The team builds the capabilities that make those options possible so partners can manage cash around their business needs.

The team is small and growing and is developing new products in a domain with a lot to learn. You will have real influence over how customer problems are solved, how systems are designed and how engineering quality is kept as the team grows. The work mixes product development with building dependable services that move money across systems.

You will work with product managers, partner banks and engineers at the company whose systems handle accounts, incoming payments and liquidity. Together you will learn what partners need, agree how the systems connect and turn complex requirements into practical products.

The company is looking for a Senior Product Engineer who likes understanding a customer's problem, designing a solution and being responsible for how it performs in production. The role is hands-on and carries substantial ownership, with the autonomy to move work forward while colleagues contribute through shared design, reviews and pairing.

Responsibilities

  • Take solutions from problem to production. Work with product managers and engineers to understand partner needs, shape an approach, and design, build, test and run backend services.
  • Make sound technical decisions and explain the tradeoffs between delivery speed, reliability and maintainability, including when information is incomplete.
  • Work across system boundaries by agreeing clear interfaces with other teams and understanding how changes affect the wider payment journey.
  • Improve the systems you run by strengthening testing and observability, diagnosing production issues and using those lessons to make services more dependable.
  • Help the team succeed by contributing across workstreams, sharing domain knowledge and helping other engineers grow through reviews, pairing and mentoring.
  • The backend stack uses Java, Spring Boot, Kafka and PostgreSQL. You will deepen your knowledge of funding, settlement and currency conversion and use it to guide product and engineering choices. As the team's scope grows, you may take on wider technical ownership and shape how the team builds.
  • Design, develop and maintain highly scalable services in Java and Spring Boot within a microservices architecture.
  • Apply domain-driven design to build robust, scalable solutions.
  • Lead development of event-driven architectures using Kafka or similar messaging systems.
  • Architect, design and optimise relational databases, such as PostgreSQL, for performance and scalability.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to support partner integrations and expand the company payment platform globally.
  • Take part in code reviews, champion good coding practices and mentor junior engineers.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience building large-scale distributed systems or making substantial contributions to them.
  • Strong backend engineering experience, covering relational databases, event-driven systems and proficiency in an object-oriented language.
  • A product mindset: you can explain the customer problems behind your work, why your solution matters and how you judge whether it helps.
  • You take ownership with a high degree of autonomy, keep making progress through ambiguity and bring in others when their expertise is needed.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, including explaining technical decisions, working effectively across teams and helping colleagues succeed.
  • Curiosity about the business domain and a willingness to learn how partners use the products you build.
  • Useful additional experience, not required: Java, Spring Boot, Kafka or PostgreSQL.
  • Useful additional experience, not required: payments, financial technology, funding, settlement or foreign exchange.
  • Useful additional experience, not required: using product metrics and data to understand customer behaviour and guide decisions.
  • You can learn the technologies and banking domain on the job. If you bring the core engineering experience, ownership and curiosity described above, the company would like to hear from you.
