Description

The team works on surgical robotic product lines and is extending them. The focus is embedded software for the ION robotic bronchoscopy platform, within the Product Engineering group.

You will help support and maintain the existing platform. The role suits someone who works well in a small, intense team, can turn loose requirements into working solutions, and cares deeply about product quality.

Quick learning, curiosity about requirements, and a drive to build solutions are key, as is a readiness to share both responsibility and credit for results. Development and management staff know the work closely and want you to do well.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and improve embedded software running on several hardware boards, with a focus on reliability, performance and customer experience.
  • Find root causes of problems in released products and put fixes in place.
  • Support deployed medical devices by troubleshooting firmware and system faults and by investigating and closing customer complaints.
  • Partner with hardware and test teams across the full life of medical device systems.
  • Write and keep up technical records, including design descriptions, test protocols and change history, meeting internal and regulatory rules.
  • Make sure every design meets strict quality and safety standards set by the company Quality Management System.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer engineering, computer science or a related technical field, plus 8+ years of experience; or a Master's degree plus 6+ years of experience.
  • Strong skill in writing and debugging firmware and software in C and C++.
  • Working knowledge of Python for scripting, testing, and building applications and tools.
  • Hands-on experience with embedded communication protocols: I2C, SPI, UART, CAN and TCP/IP networking.
  • Proven record of debugging embedded systems and tracing faults across mechanical, hardware and software components.
  • Demonstrated ability to build working relationships across functions, shown by taking part in at least two large multi-department projects or initiatives.
  • Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience across the product development lifecycle, from design and implementation through debugging, verification, validation and handover to manufacturing.
  • Experience with current software lifecycle tools such as JIRA, Git and Jenkins.
  • Experience with build systems such as CMake and Emake.
  • Proven experience implementing and troubleshooting fiber optic communication interfaces in embedded systems.
  • Experience supporting commercial medical devices in the field.

Conditions

The company and/or its customers may require proof of current vaccination against certain diseases, including COVID-19. Requirements vary by role.

Export controls: some roles may be subject to U.S. Export Administration Regulations (15 CFR §743.13(b)) for candidates who are nationals of embargoed or sanctioned countries. Information you provide may be used to decide whether an export license (which can take 3 to 6+ months) or a Technology Control Plan (typically adding 2 weeks) is needed. For export-controlled roles, offers depend on an approved license and/or executed TCP before the start date, which may or may not be flexible and must not unreasonably delay hiring. Candidates will be told of any steps required.

Applicants with arrest and conviction records are considered in line with fair chance laws.

Preference goes to qualified candidates who do not live, and do not plan to live, in Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina or Tennessee.

The role may be filled at a different job level than advertised, depending on business need and the selected candidate's experience, knowledge and skills.

Pay is set mainly by the job level the role is filled at and the candidate's qualifications, in line with applicable law.
