Description

First published on 13-10-2026.

The Discovery team sits within Wholesale Banking Advanced Analytics (WBAA). It is a quick-moving group that works with several areas of the Wholesale Banking division to explore, shape and test AI opportunities.

The team first gathers ideas and scores them on business impact, reusability, scalability and strategic fit. The strongest ideas move into an AI discovery phase, where they are assessed for desirability, viability and feasibility.

The team helps stakeholders pin down their problems, checks data and technical feasibility, and builds rapid prototypes that show business value. Initiatives that succeed are handed to Wholesale Banking teams for building.

You will turn unclear business questions into practical, workable analytics solutions. The company is looking for a senior data engineer with a keen interest in AI, especially large language models.

Responsibilities

  • Define business problems and clarify requirements with stakeholders.
  • Examine data and judge whether the technology can support the idea.
  • Build quick proofs of concept and prototypes.
  • Turn results into clear recommendations and structured handover packs for the teams that will build the solution.
  • Work with a start-up mindset: short feedback loops, iterative delivery and pragmatic trade-offs, while meeting banking standards for risk, privacy, security and model governance.
  • Build strong working relationships with stakeholders and explain complex ideas simply.
  • Structure unclear problems, make sound decisions with incomplete information, and adjust when requirements change.
  • Work closely with engineers, architects, analysts, data scientists, UX designers and product owners.

Requirements

  • Strong proficiency in Python.
  • Experience building scalable data pipelines and improving processing performance, using tools such as Spark and Airflow and techniques such as partitioning, incremental loads and performance tuning.
  • Knowledge of medallion architecture and data quality frameworks such as GE and Pydantic.
  • Proven experience integrating AI, including large language models such as Gemini and Claude, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), prompt design and evaluation, and vector databases.
  • Ability to explore data quickly and judge feasibility, including availability, quality, constraints and likely business impact.
  • Experience building rapid prototypes or proofs of concept and turning the outcomes into clear recommendations and next steps.
  • Experience designing and deploying cloud solutions, including CI/CD and containerisation with Docker.
  • Experience in a production-minded setting: staging, testing, monitoring, observability and reliability.
  • Comfortable with shifting priorities and varying levels of certainty, structuring problems and driving decisions with limited information.
  • Nice to have: experience training, validating and tracking ML models.
  • Nice to have: GCP expertise.
  • Nice to have: familiarity with discovery processes or design sprints, and strong storytelling and visualisation skills to build alignment.
  • Nice to have: experience with Kubernetes and container platforms such as OpenShift.
  • Nice to have: experience building and maintaining high-load APIs and governing OpenAPI integrations.
  • Nice to have: basic networking knowledge and familiarity with event-driven architecture.
  • Nice to have: experience with APIs and service-based architectures, including microservices, REST and async programming.
  • Nice to have: experience working in regulated environments.
  • Nice to have: familiarity with agentic frameworks such as ADK, LangChain, LangGraph and CrewAI, and multi-agent design patterns.
  • Nice to have: basic understanding of Java or Kotlin for connecting to internal systems.
  • Nice to have: contributions to open-source projects.
  • Nice to have: you are encouraged to apply even if you do not meet every requirement.
