Senior C Developer

Description

You will be a hands-on engineer on a large datacenter migration that moves a long-running payments platform from UNIX/AIX to Red Hat Linux and refactors its applications for AWS.

Your work centres on C applications: analysing, refactoring and consolidating them, with solid systems knowledge guiding how you reason about behaviour.

After the migration, you may move on to long-term BAU, project and client-integration work on the same platform.

Responsibilities

• Design, estimate and build technical solutions for applications of medium to high complexity.
• Take part in every phase of the application development lifecycle.
• Work with project stakeholders to clarify requirements, processes, architecture and priorities.
• Advise on IT industry standards, tools and practices, including DevOps, to produce well-built software.
• Suggest improvements and raise risks and issues in development work.
• Review the work of other development team members.
• Pick up new technologies, practices and tools when the project calls for them.
• Share what you learn from projects with others.
• Influence the team, customers and suppliers.
• Make decisions that affect project success and team goals.
• Propose and design solutions on your own initiative.

Requirements

• 5+ years of hands-on software development, with clear, provable skill in plain C.
• Strong UNIX background on AIX and Red Hat Linux, including a record of porting and refactoring applications from AIX to Red Hat.
• Shell scripting in Korn shell (ksh) and Bash for building, running and deploying across UNIX systems.
• Working knowledge of the C build and debug toolchain: Make and Makefiles, gcc, gdb and core dump analysis.
• Experience refactoring and consolidating applications, including redesign during a migration.
• Self-directed, able to work autonomously and own work from start to finish.
• Clear communicator who can explain solutions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• SQL and relational databases such as DB2 and Oracle, including embedded SQL (ProC / ESQL/C) in C applications.
• Sockets, TCP/IP and inter-process communication for integrations and messaging between applications.
• Awareness of porting issues between AIX on POWER and Linux on x86: endianness, data type sizes and compiler differences.
• Knowledge of payments and financial transaction processing, e.g. ISO 8583, card and transaction switching, PCI DSS.
• Git and GitHub, as the project is moving source control from SCCS to GitHub.
• Exposure to Harness or a similar enterprise CI/CD tool such as Jenkins.
• Familiarity with AWS, since the migrated applications will run in the cloud while databases stay in a payments datacenter.
• Exposure to Linux administration, Docker or containers, or Terraform and infrastructure as code on the cloud target.
• Experience working with external clients and third-party systems.
