Description

You will join the BI team across FinTech and Fashion Tech as a senior engineer, reporting to the Staff Engineering Lead. Your job is to turn the lead's strategy into delivery, guide the team day to day, and act as the most experienced data specialist in the group.

The team covers all business reporting and BI for both areas. This includes the reports the business relies on, the reconciliations that check data feeds, the data warehouse, and the sync of data between the ERP and the wider systems.

The stack is Python, PySpark, Delta Lake and Databricks, with T-SQL, Kimball dimensional modelling and Power BI, built around Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations data structures. The company is assessing a move from Databricks to Microsoft Fabric, so you should be ready to work through that platform decision and any migration that follows.

The company is an online fashion retailer serving customers worldwide.

Responsibilities

  • Mentor the BI team and help it run day to day, turning the lead's strategy into a plan it can deliver.
  • Coach the other BI engineers on reporting and data work through design reviews, pairing and code review.
  • Act as the senior technical voice in the team, setting standards for modelling, building and testing and raising quality.
  • Balance the team's workload across reporting requests, reconciliations and platform work, and take on the hardest builds yourself.
  • Own the data warehouse, including the dimensional model, the pipelines that load it and the standards that keep it consistent as it grows.
  • Own the ERP to warehouse sync, ensuring data arrives complete, on time and in a form the business can use.
  • Build and maintain reconciliations that prove feeds are complete and accurate, and investigate and repair them when they break.
  • Deliver reporting stakeholders can trust, from the underlying models through to well built, performant Power BI reports.
  • Design and build pipelines in Python, PySpark and Delta Lake, and write the T-SQL behind the models and reconciliations.
  • Monitor cost, performance and reliability across the platform and improve systems already in live use.
  • Work with Finance, Tech and Fashion stakeholders, including Commercial, Buying and Product, to understand what they need from their data.
  • Turn reporting requests into clear requirements, and push back constructively when an existing report or a different view of the data would meet the need.
  • Keep stakeholders informed about progress, priorities and risks to the data they depend on.
  • Work with solution, engineering and support teams across FinTech and Fashion Tech so upstream ERP changes do not break downstream reporting.
  • Follow the wider delivery process, including governance, change control and release cadence, and manage the team's work in Azure DevOps.
  • Work with Architecture, Security and Risk to ensure what you build meets company standards, protects sensitive financial data and can pass audit.
  • The numbers this team produces underpin most decisions in Finance and commercial teams, from month end close and supplier payments to trading, stock and range performance. A wrong warehouse or a silently dropped feed leads to poor decisions.
  • The role sets that quality standard. You will own the warehouse and the ERP sync end to end, lead the team through a possible platform change, and stay close enough to the detail to build the difficult parts yourself.

Requirements

  • Strong hands-on experience with Python, SQL, PySpark and Delta Lake for building scalable data pipelines.
  • Experience with the Azure data services, including Azure Data Factory (ADF), Azure Functions, Logic Apps and Azure Storage.
  • Strong experience with Databricks and Microsoft Fabric, including Lakehouse and modern data engineering approaches.
  • Strong SQL and T-SQL skills, plus experience with Kimball dimensional modelling and data warehouse design.
  • Experience integrating ERP data, ideally from Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations or another major ERP.
  • Working knowledge of Power BI, DAX and data modelling, with a focus on useful business reporting.
  • Experience leading or mentoring engineers, setting technical standards and raising the quality of a team's output.
  • Able to take a strategy set by someone else and turn it into a plan a team can deliver.
  • Able to prioritise competing requests and make clear decisions about what gets done now and what waits.
  • Confident working with Finance, Tech and commercial stakeholders, able to explain data simply and push back when a request does not hold up.
  • Careful about data quality, with the patience to trace a reconciliation break to its root cause.
  • Organised and calm under pressure, especially at month end and during peak trading.
  • We'd also love to see: experience of a lakehouse or warehouse migration, or of working through a platform decision such as Databricks to Microsoft Fabric.
  • We'd also love to see: knowledge of finance or supply chain processes such as procure to pay, order to cash, month end close, or stock and warehouse operations.
  • We'd also love to see: experience in retail, ecommerce or fashion, particularly reporting for buying, merchandising or trading.
  • We'd also love to see: experience with CI/CD for data, testing frameworks, data observability, or governance and cataloguing tools.
