Description

The company's advanced research group drives strategy and leads research and development to help power the energy transition, forging collaborations and inventing the technologies needed to electrify and decarbonize.

Researchers from nearly every major science and engineering field work with the company's businesses, the U.S. government, and more than 420 outside organizations on over 150 energy projects. These aim to fix near-term technical problems, build the next generation of products, and produce long-term breakthroughs that make energy more affordable, reliable, sustainable, and secure.

The company is a purpose-built energy technology firm aiming to electrify and decarbonize the world. Its AI team at the Advanced Research Center builds and demonstrates new AI technologies for energy, and works alongside a skilled, motivated group of AI researchers laying the groundwork for that goal.

As a Research Scientist, you will design, build, and apply AI methods such as machine learning, deep learning, generative AI, and foundation models to difficult energy problems. Work ranges from basic theory and experiments through to prototypes and finished solutions. Projects cover power generation, renewable energy, electric grids, robotics, and manufacturing, and you will partner with business units and researchers across many fields. You will also join externally partnered research with universities and government, advancing AI research at the company and the wider frontier of scientific knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Research, conceptualize, and develop AI solutions for hard industrial problems.
  • Build early prototypes and working solutions that show what AI can do on real-world problems.
  • Work with peer researchers on new and ongoing projects.
  • Use software libraries, tools, and practices to create efficient, scalable, reusable solutions.
  • Write invention disclosures and file patents to protect new intellectual property.
  • Publish your research in scientific journals and at conferences.
  • Write grant proposals and support them as needed.

Requirements

  • A PhD in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field with an AI focus, or an MS in one of those fields plus at least 2 years of work experience focused on AI.
  • Ability to write Python code.
  • Familiarity with AI, ML, and GenAI packages and frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, and HuggingFace.
  • Deep expertise in at least one of: large language models, time-series or multi-modal foundation models, scientific machine learning with physics, or graph neural networks.
  • Desired: a PhD focused on recent advances in AI.
  • Desired: experience in at least one of: multi-modal foundation models combining images, tabular data, and text; integrating physics into machine learning; graph neural networks for energy systems; or integrating LLMs with knowledge graphs.
  • Desired: experience writing grant proposals and taking part in grant-funded research, including successful communication with government agencies such as DoE, ARPA-E, DoD, and DARPA.
  • Desired: contributions to public-domain codebases or a substantial GitHub portfolio that shows mastery and impact.
