Description

You will lead reporters who cover areas outside San Antonio, including Austin, Fredericksburg, New Braunfels and San Marcos, and you will also report and write stories from those places.

The role supports the company's push into the regions around San Antonio.

The company runs the top local news site in San Antonio, with over 5 million unique visitors a month. It publishes daily news and information on food, pop culture, the San Antonio Spurs, local TV personalities, real estate, weather and more across South and Central Texas.

The newsroom is separate and editorially independent from a sister outlet, the San Antonio Express-News.

The hardest part of the job is steering strong journalism that holds the attention of online readers.

Responsibilities

• Run the content plan and the work of reporters in the expansion areas. Spot timely stories that suit a digital-first audience, assign stories and video, help reporters brainstorm and sharpen their pitches, and edit their copy for style and accuracy.
• Build a creative working relationship with reporters so they produce excellent journalism.
• Write and report stories and videos that are timely, engaging and built to draw traffic, as needed.

Requirements

• At least two years of experience as an editor.
• At least two years of experience as a reporter.
• A bachelor's degree.
• Skill in editing so that published stories and videos are well sourced, clear and accurate.
• Awareness of news developing in the region, so coverage stays timely and urgent.
• Creative and analytical thinking to generate and improve story ideas and submitted work.
• The ability to edit and publish quickly when events demand it, to read audience data and judge whether coverage lands, and to give reporters feedback that helps them refocus.
• The right to work in the U.S. without immigration sponsorship.

Conditions

You can assign, edit and publish stories and videos without a supervisor's sign-off.

Major spending, reporter travel outside the region, and publishing sensitive investigative pieces need approval from others.

Success is measured by how many stories you produce, how good they are, and their effect on website visits and video views.
