Description

The company provides wealth management, asset servicing, asset management and banking services. It is listed on Nasdaq as NTRS and works for individuals, families, corporations and institutions.

Since 1889 the company has been guided by three principles: Service, Expertise and Integrity. It has more than 135 years of financial experience and over 24,000 employees, whom it calls partners.

This principal role combines technical leadership with hands-on work on complex, cloud-native software. You will also mentor engineers and shape architecture across global teams.

The team wants someone who cares about engineering quality, AI-assisted development and building scalable products with modern practices.

The company offers a flexible, collaborative culture with a record of financial stability. Internal moves are encouraged, senior leaders are accessible, and employees are active in philanthropy and in the communities it serves.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and review production-ready software yourself, setting the standard for quality.
  • Lead development in Java, applying clean code, TDD and spec-driven development.
  • Encourage use of AI-assisted tools, such as Copilot-style assistants and intelligent automation, to raise developer output and code quality.
  • Shape application and solution architecture for scalability, security, performance and maintainability. Work with architects and senior engineers to set and enforce engineering standards and best practices.
  • Design, build and deploy applications on Microsoft Azure using cloud-native services.
  • Help make architecture decisions covering Azure compute, networking, storage and security, plus SQL and NoSQL databases and their performance.
  • Improve DevOps pipelines, CI/CD and infrastructure automation, and make systems resilient, observable and cost-efficient.
  • Promote TDD and automated testing at unit, integration and system levels, and help build test automation frameworks across teams.
  • Work with DevOps and SRE colleagues to improve release reliability and deployment frequency, reduce operational risk and technical debt, and strengthen monitoring, alerting and production readiness.
  • Mentor engineers through code reviews, design discussions and technical deep dives, building their skills and sense of ownership.
  • Advise product, QA and platform teams on technical questions.
  • Work with product, architecture, QA and operations. Explain complex technical topics clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Work with teams in North America, EMEA and India, adjusting for time-zone overlap when needed.
  • Spot risks early and propose practical solutions.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a solid record of hands-on work.
  • Deep Java skills and experience with modern application frameworks.
  • Strong background in Azure cloud services and building cloud-native applications.
  • Practical experience with TDD, spec-driven or contract-first development, and CI/CD and DevOps practices.
  • Working knowledge of cloud databases, data modelling and performance tuning.
  • Ability to lead through influence rather than formal authority.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Strong problem-solving, design and decision-making skills.
  • Comfortable working in fast-moving, changing environments.
  • Preferred: Microsoft Azure Architect Certification, which is strongly preferred.
  • Preferred: experience bringing AI-assisted engineering tools into development workflows.
  • Preferred: exposure to large-scale modernization, cloud migration or distributed systems.
  • Preferred: experience in regulated or enterprise-grade environments.
