Principal Software Engineer, Embedded (RIS)

Description

The role is hybrid, with an average of 2 days per week in an office.

The company is a global edge-to-cloud business. The Networking unit builds AI-driven networking products, including campus, branch, mobility and IoT solutions that combine compute, analytics, automation and secure connectivity.

You will join a platform team that writes firmware and drivers for network processor (NPU) and ASIC devices in the company's routing platforms.

The team builds high-complexity, high-scale networking platforms, including new silicon and the platform software that runs on it. The pace is fast and the development cycle is short.

Responsibilities

• Design and build platform and system software and firmware for networking platforms.
• Work on a project team that develops software for the company's router products.
• Take part in every stage of software work, from gathering requirements through implementation to ongoing maintenance.
• Write functional, design and unit test specifications.
• Design and build complex embedded code modules, then troubleshoot and fix defects.
• Communicate clearly with hardware, software and systems teams to keep collaboration strong.

Requirements

• A BS or MS in computer science, computer engineering or a similar field.
• 10+ years of experience developing and debugging embedded systems.
• Strong skills in C and C++, embedded systems, and device driver development on Linux or Unix.
• Hands-on experience writing embedded software for network switches or routers.
• Experience bringing up new hardware.
• Strong communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills, which are essential.
• Desired: experience with Ethernet interfaces, high-speed PHYs or SERDES, and fabric management.
• Preferred: a good understanding of hardware board design and layout.
• Preferred: development experience with PCIe, I2C, FPGAs, Ethernet MAC/PHY and high-speed buses.
• Preferred: experience with device drivers, interface management and chassis management, which is a big plus.
• Preferred: knowledge of virtualization, which is a plus.
• Preferred: strong debugging skills and wide experience with software, hardware and memory debugging tools.

Conditions

The base salary range in California is USD 172,000 to 349,000 per year.

Actual pay may differ based on location, experience, education, training and skill level.

Variable incentives may also be offered on top of base salary.
