The ChatGPT Learning team builds new learning experiences inside ChatGPT, which millions of people use each week to understand concepts, practice skills, and solve problems, making learning one of its largest consumer uses.

The team is working on helping ChatGPT support learning that continues over time, not just single answers, and on making AI learning tools easier for people to reach so they can understand the world, build skills, and reach their goals.

The team includes product engineers, designers, AI researchers, and educators who serve learners worldwide.

The role is a Principal Software Engineer on the ChatGPT Learning team, setting technical direction and leading design and development of products that help millions of people learn with ChatGPT.

You will stay hands-on across the stack, building polished interfaces and scalable backend services, and work with product managers, designers, researchers, and platform teams to bring new model capabilities into everyday learning.

You will share product and design decisions with your cross-functional partners, shaping what gets built, how it works, and who it serves.

The company wants an engineer with strong product judgment who can turn unclear opportunities into concrete direction, take complex initiatives from concept to launch, and raise the quality of the team's technical work.

Responsibilities

• Lead end-to-end work on learning experiences in ChatGPT, from early exploration through production and ongoing iteration.
• Make product and design calls with product managers and designers, using technical insight, user feedback, and judgment to set priorities and weigh tradeoffs.
• Set technical direction for complex initiatives and guide architecture choices that allow fast experimentation and stay reliable over time.
• Build multimodal learning features that combine text, images, voice, and interactive interfaces.
• Develop scalable services and APIs that support learning features across ChatGPT.
• Prototype ideas with researchers, platform teams, designers, and engineers, and bring new AI capabilities to users.
• Improve performance, reliability, and usability across ChatGPT's learning surfaces, using experiments and user feedback to decide what to change.
• Mentor other engineers, review their code, and give clear technical guidance.

Requirements

• You have 10+ years of software engineering experience and a record of shipping high-quality products across the full stack.
• You have led complex technical initiatives and made architecture decisions that balance product needs, development speed, and maintainability.
• You have worked on product and design decisions closely with product managers and designers.
• You like building consumer products and owning them from first concept through production.
• You can bring structure to unclear problems and turn them into practical product solutions.
• You have strong product engineering instincts and care about the quality of the user experience.
• You have built interactive educational tools or learning products.
• You have built AI-powered applications or systems based on large language models.
• You want to build products with meaningful global impact and widen access to education and learning.

Conditions

The role is based in San Francisco or New York City, with three days per week in the office.

Relocation assistance is available to new hires.
