Principal / Senior Principal Navigation Systems Engineer

The team is hiring a Principal or Senior Principal Navigation Systems Engineer to design and build model-based navigation software for a defense sector group focused on mission-enabling solutions for global security.

The role sits in the Emerging Capabilities Development group, which pushes innovation, reshapes what systems can do, and advances several scientific fields.

The work supports the company's enterprise digital transformation, using model-based engineering and Agile methods to deliver critical national defense products for warfighters.

The work is done in Woodland Hills, CA, in a collaborative team that values shared responsibility, flexibility, continuous learning and innovation.

The job may be filled at either the Principal or the Senior Principal level.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate navigation performance in lab and flight test scenarios.
• Report status, issues and results to program management and customers.
• Work closely with internal and external stakeholders to advance navigation and timing technology.
• Collaborate with navigation and timing experts on pushing the state of the art.
• Apply new navigation systems, techniques, algorithms and software to improve mission outcomes.
• Present your ideas to internal and external audiences, and represent the company at technical conferences and working groups.

Requirements

• Principal level: a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field with 5 years of engineering experience, a Master's in a STEM field with 3 years, or a PhD in a STEM field with 1 year.
• Senior Principal level: a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field with 8 years of engineering experience, a Master's in a STEM field with 6 years, or a PhD in a STEM field with 4 years.
• Experience implementing sensor fusion for navigation using IMUs (Inertial Measurement Units), GPS, barometers and other sensors.
• Experience implementing advanced state estimation, such as Extended Kalman Filtering, Unscented Kalman Filtering or Particle Filtering, to determine position, velocity and attitude.
• Experience with noise modeling and covariance tuning.
• Experience analyzing data from inertial navigation systems.
• Hands-on experience with accelerometers, gyroscopes and barometers used for navigation.
• Experience implementing multi-sensor synchronization and calibration.
• U.S. citizenship is required.
• You must be able to obtain and keep a U.S. Government Secret security clearance.
• You must work full-time onsite in Woodland Hills, CA.
• Preferred: experience developing algorithms for satellite acquisition, tracking and receiver measurement formation.
• Preferred: familiarity with military navigation modernization, especially M-code signal processing and capabilities.
• Preferred: familiarity with timing and distributed clock algorithms.
• Preferred: familiarity with inertial navigation system (INS) mechanizations.
• Preferred: understanding of combining data from IMUs, GPS, barometers and other sensors.
• Preferred: understanding of multi-sensor synchronization and calibration.
• Preferred: familiarity with designing tracking loops, including characterizing platform dynamics and environmental or interference effects.
• Preferred: understanding of accelerometers, gyroscopes, magnetometers and their role in navigation.

Conditions

Relocation assistance may be available.

A security clearance is not required to start, but the role requires a U.S. Government Secret clearance.

Travel is about 10% of the time.

Primary level base salary range: $114,000.00 - $171,000.00.

Secondary level base salary range: $142,200.00 - $213,400.00.

These ranges are general guidelines. Base pay depends on the scope and responsibilities of the role, your experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
