Description

The company is seeking a Principal Fire Engineer for its Fire Team. This is a consultancy role in a client-facing setting, and it calls for a track record across several sectors and in technical fire engineering work.

You will work with office leads to run and grow a local team, guiding people and mentoring them with support from senior staff. You should already have solid professional experience and be ready to take on more.

The role suits an established consultant looking to move their career forward, or an engineer who wants to widen their knowledge and design skills at a well-established fire safety consultancy.

The company is a Fortune 500 infrastructure consulting firm with a global team of over 50,000 planners, engineers, designers and other professionals. Its Professional Services business reported $16.1 billion in revenue for fiscal year 2025.

Responsibilities

  • Take projects from start to finish with little senior oversight, including CFD modelling, evacuation modelling and other analytical fire engineering work.
  • Manage design projects, and prepare and review the work of others.
  • Devise new approaches to unfamiliar problems by adapting standard procedures and methods from earlier assignments.
  • Take part in interdisciplinary reviews of project deliverables.
  • Lead the preparation of accurate cost estimates for technical work on projects.
  • Lead the performance and review process for junior engineers, setting and tracking SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound).
  • Support and mentor less experienced staff as they work towards Chartership.

Requirements

  • Minimum: a relevant degree or professional qualification.
  • Minimum: chartered status (CEng) in fire engineering or a related discipline. This is essential.
  • Minimum: work experience in a similar consultancy or another relevant business.
  • Minimum: demonstrable experience across a range of sectors and technical fire engineering applications, with a particular focus on UK regulations and markets.
  • Minimum: demonstrable experience managing the fire engineering side of small to medium design projects within agreed timescales and budgets.
  • Minimum: experience guiding entry level fire engineers.
  • Minimum: experience preparing fee proposals and task variations for fire engineering work.
  • Preferred: demonstrable experience leading and actively supervising a team of more junior engineers, covering both people and projects.
  • Preferred: a clear work history and evidence of professional development and learning.

Conditions

Hybrid working is available, and you can work from an office, a remote location or a client site.

All newly hired employees must attend an in-person Day 1 onboarding at an office location as a condition of employment.

The company is a Disability Confident Employer and will interview applicants with a disability or long-term condition who meet the minimum essential criteria for the role.

Applicants are treated equally under the company's equal opportunity policy, and all information is kept confidential under EEO guidelines.

Benefits

  • Core and personalised benefits designed to support your future, well-being and lifestyle.
  • Career development opportunities.
  • Access to technical practice networks and the company University.
  • Volunteering days.
  • Access to industry-leading technology and thinking, and work on large projects with significant impact.
