Description

The Global Network Infrastructure team builds and runs the global backbone that links the company's growing compute capacity to data centers, cloud providers and network points of presence (PoPs), supporting the company's research and products.

As compute capacity expands worldwide, the team is widening the network to handle more traffic with better reliability and efficiency. The work spans physical design, carrier links, deployment and troubleshooting.

You will bring new connectivity online and keep the backbone running, working with fiber providers, cloud providers and internal infrastructure teams. The team suits engineers who like working close to the hardware and who want to automate network operations at scale.

Responsibilities

  • Own the full turn-up of new circuits, working with fiber carriers and cloud providers to set up and verify connectivity.
  • Design, deploy and support WAN links across data centers, PoPs and cloud connections.
  • Diagnose failures that cross carrier, cloud provider and internal boundaries, and drive each one to resolution.
  • Troubleshoot physical, Layer 2 and Layer 3 faults, including optical signal problems, FEC errors, routing faults and dropped connections.
  • Help plan the physical layout, covering port mappings, fiber and cable runs, optical distribution frame (ODF) layouts and connectivity.
  • Monitor network health, circuit utilization and performance to find capacity limits and reliability risks early.
  • Build automation and tooling for provisioning, deployment checks, troubleshooting and routine operations.
  • Work with network engineering, data center infrastructure and external providers to grow the global backbone.
  • Join the on-call rotation to keep critical network infrastructure reliable.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience deploying, activating and fixing WAN circuits with telecom carriers, fiber providers or cloud providers.
  • A solid grasp of networking basics, including optical networking, Ethernet, TCP/IP, BGP and Layer 2 and 3 connectivity.
  • Comfortable tracing problems across layers, from fiber and optical errors up through routing and forwarding.
  • Experience with data center networks, carrier infrastructure, cloud interconnects or large WAN environments.
  • Understanding of fiber cabling, port mapping, ODFs and how network equipment is connected.
  • Able to investigate unclear connectivity problems alone and coordinate internal and external teams to restore service.
  • Scripting or automation skills, and a drive to replace manual work with repeatable processes.
  • Enjoy hands-on infrastructure work and take problems from first deployment through steady operation.
  • Comfortable in a fast-changing environment where engineering choices affect global scale.
  • Experience building or running large backbone networks, hyperscale data center networks or cloud interconnect infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with optical transport technology, network telemetry and deep troubleshooting of physical links.
  • Experience automating network operations with Python, Go or infrastructure automation frameworks.
  • Experience bringing new PoPs online or supporting large network expansion projects.
  • Experience working with carriers, colocation providers and cloud networking teams on complex connectivity deployments.

Conditions

On-call rotation participation is required.

The company is an equal opportunity employer, and background checks follow applicable law, including San Francisco, Los Angeles County and California fair chance rules for US-based candidates, with applicants who have arrest or conviction records considered under those laws.
