Description

The company employs more than 83,000 people on five continents, including over 7,500 in the UK. It works in defence, space, aerospace and digital security.

Work is split into two portfolios, Secure Communication and Protection. The Land Communications team builds tactical radio and electronic countermeasures for UK and global markets. The Security and Naval Communications team has worked with the Royal Navy for over 100 years and delivers integrated voice and data systems for resilient, mission-ready communication.

This role gives the MCCS programme senior engineering leadership, governance and oversight. You will spot and reduce risks and find chances to gain ground on the engineering challenges in the bids and programmes across the business.

You will report to the Head of Systems Engineering and the MCCS Programme Director. You will work with stakeholders, competence centres, and project, technical and engineering teams to lead technical and engineering work across MCCS, so that all activity meets business and customer requirements. The role draws on your experience delivering technical and engineering programmes, and you will coach and inspire others to keep engineering risk low.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical and engineering work across the MCCS programme so it meets business and customer requirements.
  • Make sure business engineering risks are understood and reduced, with a clear downward trend through each programme stage and across its contracted sub-systems.
  • Manage key stakeholder relationships and communication across the business, and with external parties where needed, to keep the company's competitive advantage.
  • Carry out engineering reviews of bids, project work and product solutions.
  • Coach engineers and spot problems early, then prevent, mitigate, resolve or escalate them within the business and its segments as appropriate.
  • Put governance in place across the business so the role's objectives are met.

Requirements

  • Industry experience, including a past role as chief engineer at BAE or Lockheed Martin.
  • Experience coordinating technical teams and understanding product development cycles and the integration of specialist teams.
  • Hands-on experience with the technical application and architecture of naval communications.
  • Significant engineering experience, including delivering large engineering programmes.
  • Strong people management, with the ability to communicate at every level of an organisation.
  • A good problem solver who shows initiative and can improvise.
  • Experience working in complex engineering environments with strong governance.
  • The ability to work across business and cultural boundaries and to coach and mentor senior staff.
  • A solid understanding of engineering environments and how they affect the business, plus knowledge of employee engagement drivers and engineering culture.
  • The confidence to challenge established processes and propose new approaches.
  • Strong attention to detail, especially when investigating problems, and pride in accurate work.
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team with suppliers, company staff and the customer.
  • An engineering qualification at degree level or Masters.
  • Clear demonstration of the company's leadership model in daily work, such as shaping solutions out of complexity.
  • A professional, committed approach that follows the company's values.
  • Passion, energy, drive, agility and resilience toward work goals, including under difficult conditions.
  • Enjoyment of teamwork and of growing and performing within a team.
  • Self-motivated and flexible, with a constructive can-do attitude.
  • Excellent technical observation and communication skills.

Conditions

Half day every Friday, usually finishing around 13:00.

Many roles at the company carry security restrictions because of the work it does.

You must be a UK national and obtain Security Clearance (SC) with no caveats.

Holding SC already would be an advantage. If you do not hold it, you must go through vetting, obtain SC and maintain it before you start.

If the MOD approves, a dual national from a non-ITAR country may be considered.

To be eligible for full SC, you generally need to have lived in the UK for the last 5 years. In some cases, a minimum of 3 years' UK residence over the last 5 years may be accepted, with additional overseas checks.

UKSV publishes guidance on national security vetting clearance levels.

The company ensures equal opportunities, pay and working conditions for everyone.

Benefits
