Marine Application Engineer

Description

The team sets the technical offer for power and control systems across the company's commercial and defence equipment business.

You will support bids from tender through to order handover, covering technical content, cost estimates and tender work.

Responsibilities

• Read customer requirements accurately and on time, so the offer meets their needs and the business goals.
• Work with executive management, engineering, sourcing and CommOps to settle the best technical design and win technical and commercial sign-off.
• Run the technical risk review (PRA) and build project schedules where needed.
• Write internal and external supplier specifications (ESSs).
• Help cost out bids to keep prices competitive, and keep the DP/Automation Gencost estimating sheet up to date.
• Give technical support at every bid and risk stage for the UK P&L, and act as centre of excellence (CoE) for the global business.
• Produce technical design specifications, including system design and electrical and control design diagrams.
• Support sales managers in customer meetings and negotiations.
• Join the ITOOTR handover and give technical help to order booking when asked.
• With the sales leader and account sales manager, understand the account strategy and the competitive position.
• Build creative technical proposals that offer the best solution and value, and show the value proposition to the customer.
• Where it fits, include the complete systems offer: power, propulsion, digital and automation.
• Create and present PowerPoint material that explains the value of the offer, both inside and outside the company.
• With the account sales manager, commercial, legal and senior leadership, shape the negotiation position and close orders.
• Support solutions and services for the global CoE and for projects booked by the UK P&L.
• Help win business within the unit financial KPIs: orders, cash, margin and convertibility.
• Occasionally help the project management team with claims and project variations.
• Work on several bids for several customers at the same time.

Requirements

• Preferred: a degree in engineering or suitable marine cadet training.
• Preferred: a background in marine or control engineering.
• Preferred: PC literacy and familiarity with Microsoft tools.
• Preferred: experience capturing and interpreting customer technical requirements.
• Preferred: a flexible, adaptable and enthusiastic approach, with good teamwork and clear communication.
• Preferred: a proactive style, a sense of urgency, and a focus on quality delivered on time.
• Preferred: willingness to travel domestically and overseas, which is expected as part of the job.

Conditions

The role is based mainly in the office in the UK, with some overseas travel to support the global business.

The role covers the global commercial offshore markets, including renewables, oil and gas, and non-combatant navy vessels.

The role involves a client's critical infrastructure, so shortlisted candidates will face enhanced security checks as the clients direct.
