Description

The company builds software for a cryogenic superconducting quantum computer, and this role leads a team of individual contributors doing that work.

You will be aligned with one or more technical areas, such as quantum control and firmware, instrumentation and lab software, job orchestration, verification and validation, process monitoring, or platform reliability.

About 80% of your time goes to hands-on technical work: architecture, design, implementation, integration, troubleshooting, and technical reviews. The other 20% covers people management: staffing, performance, development, workload planning, and coordination with physics, hardware, systems, test, and operations teams.

You will combine real engineering depth with leadership to deliver reliable, secure, maintainable software for timing-critical quantum control and cryogenic operations.

Relocation assistance may be available.

The role requires a US Government security clearance, as the customer requires. Clearance is not needed to start.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of 8 to 12 technical staff.
  • Provide technical leadership to the team or pod while working with program management to track execution.
  • Handle administrative management, including staffing, performance evaluation, career development, and salary planning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related STEM field, with 8+ years of relevant software engineering experience; or a Master's degree in a STEM field with 6+ years; or a PhD with 4+ years.
  • Proven experience designing, building, integrating, and troubleshooting complex software in languages such as C, C++, Rust, or Python.
  • Technical depth in at least one area: real-time or embedded control, distributed systems and orchestration, instrumentation and data acquisition, automated verification, process monitoring, DevOps, or SRE.
  • Experience leading engineers through technical planning, design and code reviews, integration, testing, and delivery.
  • Ability to turn system requirements and hardware constraints into software architectures, interfaces, implementation plans, and verification approaches.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, and the ability to work with software, systems engineering, physics, hardware, test, cybersecurity, and program leadership teams.
  • Preferred: a Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field.
  • Preferred: prior experience as an engineering manager, technical lead, product owner, or integrated product team lead, including responsibility for employee development and technical execution.
  • Preferred: experience with quantum computing, superconducting qubit control, cryogenic systems, RF electronics, pulse sequencing, calibration, or real-time feedback systems.
  • Preferred: experience integrating lab instruments and control hardware through SCPI, VISA, gRPC, message queues, or vendor SDKs.
  • Preferred: experience with production engineering practices such as CI/CD, automated testing, hardware-in-the-loop testing, configuration management, containers, Kubernetes, observability, incident response, and release management.
  • Preferred: experience delivering software in regulated, mission-critical, high-reliability, or controlled engineering settings, including requirements traceability, cybersecurity, quality assurance, and formal verification.

Conditions

Travel is about 10% of the time.

Base salary range is $161,100.00 to $241,700.00. Final pay depends on scope, responsibilities, and the candidate's experience, education, skills, and market conditions.

The application window is estimated at 20 days from the posting date and may be shortened or extended.

The company is an equal opportunity employer.

Benefits

  • Depending on the position, you may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus on top of base pay. Bonuses reward individual work and let you share in company results.
