Description

Eligibility: you must be serving permanently in the Certified IT Administrator (LAN/WAN) title, or be reachable on the open-competitive list for exam 1111 (title code LA - 13652).

The IT and Telecom division of a New York City transportation agency is hiring a junior network engineer to help run the agency's daily network operations.

The network serves about 6,000 users across 80 sites in NYC and includes more than 400 network devices, so the organization is mid-sized.

Responsibilities

  • Help run day-to-day network operations, with a main focus on field office sites.
  • Maintain, configure and document every network-related device.
  • Apply the agency's cybersecurity baseline configurations so devices stay hardened.
  • Work under the Director of Infrastructure Services, alongside the Network Infrastructure team.

Requirements

  • Hold a professional or vendor certification in local area network administration, which the role requires.
  • Bring a strong willingness to learn, along with a solid grasp of network standards and communication protocols.
  • Understand clearly how devices communicate on an Ethernet topology.
  • Option one: a bachelor's degree from an accredited college plus two years of full-time, non-classroom LAN and/or WAN work, such as planning, design, configuration, installation, implementation, troubleshooting, integration, performance monitoring, maintenance, enhancement or security management.
  • Option two: a four-year high school diploma or equivalent plus six years of full-time IT experience, at least two of which are LAN/WAN work as described in option one.
  • Option three: an equivalent mix of education and experience. Thirty undergraduate semester credits from an accredited college count as six months of experience, and a master's degree in computer science or a related field counts as one year. In every case you need at least one year of full-time, non-classroom IT experience as described in option one.
  • The ideal candidate holds a minimum CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) certification.

Conditions

You may be required to update current certifications or earn additional industry-standard ones for the technical environments you are assigned to, as the employing agency determines.

The city is an equal opportunity employer that works to build a diverse workforce and prohibits discrimination and harassment based on any legally protected status.
