Full-stack Engineer 4

Description

The team sits in the Card Account Participants domain within Card Core. The role is for a full-stack engineer to take ownership of a foundational application that the company depends on heavily.

The work centres on modernising core card participant systems by moving complex legacy systems and data onto a modern core. The goal is to bring that core into production and build new management features that improve the user experience.

You will work in a collaborative, iterative setting on complex business problems, using open source frameworks and emerging technologies. The role is highly visible and gives you direct responsibility for a business-critical system.

The stack includes PySpark, Java, Go and serverless architecture.

Responsibilities

• Lead a set of varied technology projects and a team of developers who build distributed microservices and full-stack systems that help the company meet regulatory requirements.
• Keep up with technology trends, try and learn new tools, take part in internal and external technical communities, and mentor other engineers.
• Work with digital product managers to deliver resilient cloud-based solutions that give millions of Americans better tools for financial empowerment.
• Use languages such as Java, Scala, Python, Go, Node.js, JavaScript and TypeScript, open source relational and NoSQL databases, container orchestration with Docker and Kubernetes, and a range of AWS services.
• Give technical direction across Agile teams and set standards for design, development and operational excellence.
• Work with architects to define service boundaries, integration patterns and reusable frameworks.
• Spot areas for improvement, refactor where needed, and help reduce technical debt and improve system performance.
• Shape long-term technology strategy by assessing new tools and practices, in an environment where teams own what they build.

Requirements

• Hold a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or a related quantitative field such as statistics, economics, operations research, analytics, mathematics or engineering.
• Have at least 4 years of software engineering experience. Internships do not count.
• Have at least 2 years of experience with public cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), cloud-based productivity tools or virtualisation technologies.
• Preferred: a master's degree in computer science or a related field.
• Preferred: 7+ years of coding experience in more than two of Go, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Rust, C and Scala.
• Preferred: 3+ years working with databases and database management systems.
• Preferred: 3+ years with AWS, GCP, Azure, cloud-based productivity tools or virtualisation technologies.
• Preferred: 4+ years contributing to open source frameworks.
• Preferred: 3+ years with front-end JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks.
• Preferred: 4+ years building synchronous and asynchronous APIs.
• Preferred: 3+ years with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code and automated testing frameworks.
• Preferred: 3+ years using Git-based version control such as Git, GitHub or Bitbucket.
• Preferred: 3+ years troubleshooting technical issues in cloud environments.
• Preferred: experience with modern AI-based coding tools and IDE copilots.
• Preferred: experience with interactive AI tools that go well beyond basic code completion.
• Preferred: 1+ year mentoring engineers and supporting their professional growth.
• Preferred: 1+ year using observability to find and fix performance bottlenecks in distributed systems.
• Preferred: experience leading cross-functional engineering efforts or large technical initiatives.
• Preferred: experience setting and enforcing coding standards and design patterns across teams.

Conditions

This is a hybrid role. You must follow the company's hybrid policy on required on-site presence at your assigned office.

Full-time annual base salary for McLean, VA is $197,300 to $225,100 for this role. Other locations have their own pay ranges, and the exact salary is stated in the offer letter. Part-time pay is prorated to the agreed hours.
